oil weight for oil change???

I'm up for my first oil change (B16 on the maintenance minder) and was thinking about changing it myself. The OM says to use 5W20...is it going to matter if I use 10W30? I've pretty much always used 10W30 castrol oil my whole life, but have never had a brand new vehicle before. I live in WV and we're about to head into fall so the temps will be dropping alittle.

On another note, when I called the service dept. today to get a quote for the B16 checkup they told me that it would be $275!!! How crazy is that? Other than the oil, and differential fluid change and the tire rotation it's basically just site checks on other things. I can definetly do the oil and tire rotations, but I'm unsure of the differential fluid change.

Re: oil weight for oil change???

My first oil change at the dealer was only like $30 . I don't know what oil they used either .. maybe I should check the paperwork. If i am not mistaken, Honda may spec that oil because it is mor eenergy efficient.

I don't think you should be paying $275 for a first service oil change.

This is NOT a good reason to continue doing things this way. Engines change, oil changes, etc. I suspect if you use 10W30 you will lose a bit of fuel economy and gain absolutely nothing.

I am using 5W30 Mobil1 in my RL only because that is what Sams Club sells.

Read your manual. Let your past go, your past experiences are not covered under warranty.

It's not smart to try and outsmart Honda engineering.

Re: oil weight for oil change???

Using a 30 weight oil instead of 20 weight will cause some loss of gas mileage, and will also lead to an increase in wear during cold start-up. The oil pumping system on this engine is set up to pump a 20 weight oil, so if you pump a 30 weight, it will be less efficient. Stick with 5W-20.

And how many posts are on this forum trying to do just that?

you definitely want to go with a 20W oil. The tolerences are so close in the RL's motor, it requires a thinner oil. It will cost you a little more, but you might want to consider changing to a synthetic oil. There are many threads about this on the ROC website. I used to do all of my own oil changes, but in recent years I have I gotten lazy. I just take my 5 quart jug of Mobil1
5W20 and my choice of filter into the dealership and they use them with no questions asked. Next week I will be taking my RL in for the 30K mile checkup which includes a motor oil/filter change, tire rotation, engine air filter, cabin air filter, and an overall look over, and they quoted me a price of $255. That figure should be a tad less because it includes Honda motor oil and filter. Good luck.

It will not void your warranty if you use a thicker weight or different type of oil in your vehicle.. If you want to use 20w50 Quaker State that WILL NOT void your warranty... Don't get me wrong i use the 5w20 Castrol Syntec myself..

using thicker oil alone will not void the warranty, but I would be willing to bet that if your motor developed a problem and you took it in for warranty work they would blame the 20w-50 and it would NOT be covered.
