Thoughts on modifying Gibson exhaust
Happy Thanksgiving! I installed a Gibson exhaust system about four months ago. I am very satisfied with the performance aspect, noticing a better increase in gas mileage than I thought I would see (from around 18.5 to closer to 19.5), however the sound is wearing a little thin. I am thinking about modifying the system by installing a different resonator or muffler (flowmaster or magnaflow) to help lessen the sound. I guess my question is, what is the difference between a resonator and muffler? Do you think the addition would affect the MPG gains that I have experienced? Any input/opinions are appreciated. Enjoy your Thanksgiving!

Re: Thoughts on modifying Gibson exhaust
They both perform the same task of muffling the sound, if we're talking about perforated straight through styles. A Much longer resonator say for instance the 30" Magnaflow will help eliminate / reduce some of the harsher tones as well as reduce some of the drone when installed in a long section of "unmuffled" piping. Also do remember though that a resonator is basically a restricter so your current mpg could either stay the same or drop. Hope that helps..

Re: Thoughts on modifying Gibson exhaust
EasternRidge check out my link that I did back in Sept. I have the Gibson setup and ended up taking off the first resonater and replacing it with two magnaflow round type ones. The sound has been greatly reduced. Here is the link:

Re: Thoughts on modifying Gibson exhaust
See I wanted to use the supplied hanger that is just before the firt gibson resonater so I had them install the larger magnaflow there (Inbetween the last cat and first exhaust pipe hanger). What you will do is get it up in the air and show the tech where to cut it then the second magnaflow will just take the place of the old gibson resonater. You will need to cut some more pipe off after the gibson resonator so the magnaflow will fit. I will try to take some side angle pics tomorrow so you can see the length.

Re: Thoughts on modifying Gibson exhaust
I installed the MAGNAFLOW resonator 4" Round / 2.25" inlet / 22" Body Length / 28" Overall Length (Part # 10435) and it tamed it quite a bit. I am happy now.
My truck is the original GIBSON prototype Ridgeline RTS silver that is on numerous websites advertising their exhaust system just in case you guys did not know. |
