Re: Change oil now or later?

I just did my 2nd oil and filter change today at 13000 miles.
I am having trouble removing the filter without making a huge mess.
I just unscrew it by hand but oil still goes all over the place.
Anyone got some cool tricks to make the process a little less messy?
thx in advance.
btw i am using bosch 3323 filters and castrol gtx 5w20 oil.

edit: i found the plastic bag trick in another thread. duh.

Messy removal? You could always take a center punch, and punch a hole in the bottom of the filter and let it gravity drain out into a pan for a few minutes. Then take off the filter when you don't seen it dripping anymore.

After doing my first oil change on my truck yesterday, I also discovered that the filter removal can be messy. My idea for the next time was similar to yours. I'm gonna find myself short piece of metal tube (1/4 in. diameter x 4 in. long) Cutting one end at a sharp angle (think of the old oil spouts for when oil was sold in sealed tin cans) will allow it to be poked through the filter letting it drain into the pan without any splashing. Could also put some kind of plug in the other end of the tube so you can control when the oil comes out.
Will probably be late spring to early summer before my next change out but if I remember I'll try to post an update on how this works.
If someone wants to try this, be my guest. Let us know how/if it works.
