Careful folks have a place in Lake Havasu City. And we've been thinking about a road trip to cure some cabin fever,and would have to take you up on it.

Re: Thanks “hofffam”

Well we tried our Pella Oil Extractor last Sunday. This was pretty simple to do and less messy. Just make sure you get the gasket/o-ring in the lid to seat correctly. It's a square o-ring.
It was neat not having to drag out the jack, stands, and crawl under the car(1990 Volvo 740). Also use the plastic bag around the filter trick and that worked out well also. I would recommend this method to anyone.

Looks like there has been a significant price increase.
$111.99 is now the price even with the discount.
That is getting up there.

I will still consider it, as none of the dealers near us are giving discounts on oil changes lately.

Re: Thanks “hofffam”

Hi, I sure would like to see the Pela 650 and Mityvac 7400 side by side. The Mityvac can be had from toolfetch today for ~ $50. Anyone know where the Pela is made? The Mityvac is made in China so Id pay a little more for the Pela if it was made in US, but I havnt had any problems with my Mityvac which Ive had for about 3 years. Seems like the Pela has been marketed more to boat owners over the years which could explain why they feel they can charge a premium. Some claim that the Groits garage model is the same as the PELA, but the pics dont look identicle to me. Any one used both the Mityvac and Pela or even another manu?

Re: Thanks “hofffam”

Does the Pela oil extractor get ALL the oil out of the engine?? Seems like it would leave some oil in the bottom of the pan. And how much is the Pela 650 unit?

I'd never thought about using a zip-loc bag to take off the oil filter. Great idea! That, coupled with the oil extractor, should make for a mess-free oil change. Thanks to everyone for the ideas!

I wondered if the extractor evacuated all of the oil as well Tcape so (because of my fat a$$ won’t fit on my creeper anymore) I threw a large piece of cardboard under the truck, crawled under her and opened my as yet un-used Fumoto drain valve. Nada! Well maybe a few drops but nothing significant. Keep in mind I drove home from my dad’s machine shop some 40 plus miles before yesterday’s oil change so any deposits within the oil were very well suspended. Using the maintenance reminder, I perform the oil, transfer and diff changes a little bit sooner because we tow a 19 foot travel trailer as often as we can. Money well spent!

The Pela 650 Oil Extractor is on sale for $73.99 here;

Re: Thanks “hofffam”

Virtually every automotive forum has lots of pages dedicated to the discussion of whether extractors are as good as pulling the plug, so its not something that can be answered in a few sentences. The debate goes both ways as to which is better and there are volumes of pages if you google or otherwise search for Pela or MityVac or Pela vs. Mityvac, etc. Lots of folks have done their own tests and report their results. Some things to consider are whether the front of the vehicle was raised for a standard drain, and does it help or hurt and how long does the average shop let it drain? The debate nears religious porportions. For me, I'm convinced its atleast as good maybe even better, and the convenience is the huge. This is the only method possible with some cars, but one would obviously assume that they are specifically designed to benefit from extractors. Not all vehicles lend themselves to this but many do. Its been said that some Honda dealerships use oil extraction, but dont have any first hand knowlege of any.

Thanks for the info, 5SDude. Looks like the Pela is a great investment. Now to find a Pela model that goes under there and changes the oil filter!
