New brake pads...trying to decide

...between getting original OEM pads, some Duralast Gold lifetime warranty pads from Autozone, Raybestos pads from Advance Auto or pads from NAPA.

I'll do the service myself, so any thoughts on which one of these to get? The original OEM pads have been great and haven't dusted my wheels black with brake dust, so I'm tempted to go with them, but since I do my own brake work, the lifetime warranty on some of the others pads is attractive.

Right now it's a choice between Duralast Gold from Autozone and the Honda OEM from H&A or the local dealer.

P.S. Any idea how long the read pads will last? I know the rear drum brakes on most of my vehicles have last 70-100,000 miles. This is the first vehicle I've had with 4-wheel disc brakes, so I don't know what to expect.

Re: New brake pads...trying to decide

Too early to tell if the Ridgeline will hold to this pattern, but Hondas are known to have the rear disc brakes wear just as fast or faster than the fronts. Something to do with the size of the rear pads being a lot smaller. I was suprised to have to do my wife's Accord rears before the front. The pads were a lot smaller.

Re: New brake pads...trying to decide

The illustrious Service Manual mentions using Molykote M-77 adhesive during a brake change to, I suppose, keep the shims in place or whatever. Can substitutes be used? If so, what?

Can you get this stuff at the auto store or does it come only from Honda?

Re: New brake pads...trying to decide

It keeps the pads from chattering, and thus squealing. You can use any "disc brake quiet" stuff.

Re: New brake pads...trying to decide

Well, I rotated my tires yesterday and the disk brakes on all four wheels seem to have plenty of pad left...almost a 1/2" on each of the front pads.

I'll try to post pics later, but that seems like a lot of brake life left after almost 45,000 miles. My other vehicles usually got 35-40k per set of pads for my driving conditions.

Re: New brake pads...trying to decide

After rotating the tires and checking the pads, doesn't look like I'll need new pads any time soon. Front ones have about 1/2" of pad left. Same with the back, but I didn't measure it...just took pictures for later reference.

Re: New brake pads...trying to decide

I changed my pad to ceramic and it made all the difference in the world. No more brake dust. The dust drove me crazy so I change the pads about a week after I got the truck. Another thing they are expensive but they work.
