Oil Change with Pela Extractor

First, I apologize if this has been covered already.

First oil change came due today at 6340 miles. I had purchased Pela Oil Extractor and used it for the first time on the truck. I was concerned about how well the extractor worked (how much oil was left at the bottom of the pan) so I optimistically put a cup underneath the oil pan drain bolt and removed it.

So I was pretty happy when literally only drops of oil came out of the drain hole. After five minutes it was barely enough to cover the bottom of the cup with oil.

At that point I removed the filter and to my surprise in the time it took to get the new filter and crush washer 3 ounces of oil drained out of the pan into the cup. This is in addition to the oil liberated between the filter and filter housing when it is removed. Apparently in removing the filter you allow some air to enter some oil passages and empty down into the pan.

So I think the lessons learned are a) the Pela Extractor works pretty darn good and b) remove the oil filter before you drain the oil pan.

I'll never by an oil pan crush washer again.

Re: Oil Change with Pela Extractor

Nice post and good info. I use an oil extractor and in the future will remove the oil filter before I quit pumping oil out.

Based on your experience and recommendation, I purchased a Pela 6000 this morning. I plan to use it on lawnmowers, garden tractor, and my Hondas.

Thanks for sharing.

Re: Oil Change with Pela Extractor

Read about the Pela 6000 in this forum and used it today for the first time. Man - what was I thinking - I should have bought one of these years ago. Warmed up engine, pulled the dip stick, oil filler cap and oil filter (in large sandwich bag). Oil drained very well. ( Tip- mark length of oil dip stick on Pela plastic hose line so you know you are close to oil pan bottom. When no more oil comes out, repump the Pela and move hose down some more. Its like sucking the last bit out of a malt with a straw.) Retrieved 4.3 quarts (rest was in filter) in about 6 minutes. Not one drop of oil on the garage floor. Easiest, quickest oil change of all time. No crush washers to buy either. Get one !

Smile Re: Oil Change with Pela Extractor

Hey R & R - Thanks for the update. I'll be going the PELA route in a couple of months. I'm just at 80% now. I'm thinking about using it on my lawnmowers and tractor in the mean time.

Cheers,
OCS

Re: Oil Change with Pela Extractor

I opted for a Moeller cuz thats what was on the shelf at the local Marine shop. I did my first ever oil change last month and kinda enjoyed it. Looking forward to doing them in the future. Plus with my Dad picking up HIS Ridgeline hopefully tonight, it will give me a chance to pay him back for all those break jobs he used to do on my cars over the years. And I agree, I will also be using it on my yard equipment.
