Question Cleaning Chrome look wheels?

I recently purchased the Mothers powerball and their Mothers PowerMetal Aluminum to clean the Honda Chrome look wheels, I noticed on a site selling the wheels that they are not to be cleaned with a chrome cleaner.

Does anyone know for sure if it is safe to use the Mothers cleaner on these wheels?

Re: Cleaning Chrome look wheels?

First of all, you have excellent taste in vehicles - and color! I think that our vehicles are nearly identical. I don't know about the powerball. If it is safe for clear coated surfaces it may be safe for the wheels, but I wouldn't take the chance unless you find out for sure. I just wax mine with Pinnacle wax over Klasse All-In-One just like the rest of the truck. It works great. So far, at 11,000 miles, I have not needed to clean the wheels at all. I just wash them with the same car wash suds (Mcguires Gold Class liquid) that the truck gets washed with. I do them first but use a separate bucket and mit so that the brake dust and road dirt doesn't contaminate the wash water for the body.

Hi Jforget1,

this what is on H And A website for the 17" Chrome-Look Aluminum Alloy Wheel Genuine Honda Ridgeline chrome-look aluminum wheel. Rugged 5-spoke design. Features a special process that looks just like chrome, but it won't tarnish like real chrome. Cleans up with mild soap and water, never use chrome cleaner.

Do not use PowerMetal on coated, anodized, or plated metals. If a black residue does not appear quickly while using PowerMetal, the metal is most likely coated. Discontinue use.

That is where I saw the description, I am just wondering if the Mothers cleaner is a chrome polish or is it safe for these wheels.

Re: Cleaning Chrome look wheels?

Do not use a power ball or any type of metal cleaner! Your wheels are painted (or similar process for the 'chrome look'). Treat them just like you would treat the paint on the body. Wash with soap and water, use clay if you have brake dust build up, and seal with a wax or sealant (preferably a sealant as they have a higher temperature threshold).

My rule has always been: If I am about to use this on my wheels (be it a brush, rag, product, etc.), would I feel comfortable using it on my hood? Wheels or hood, it's just paint.

Thanks for the info, I guess I should try and take back that powerball, I think it was $25 and get some other stuff to help clean her up.

Any other metal around the house? Reviews on the powerball are really good. I have the flitz version and use it a good deal-much easier than polishing by hand or cotton buffing wheels.

Will have to take a look around to see if it is worth keeping.
