How To Remove Adhesive Residue

Just got my new black Ridgeline on Wednesday, but there's a line of adhesive residue on the roof. It looks like it is from the white plastic film used to protect it in shipping. What's the best way to remove it that is still safe for the finish? Would some bug & tar remover work? Thanks!

Dave

Re: How To Remove Adhesive Residue

I would stay away from the bug & tar remover for now. Try a regular old hair dryer to soften the adhesive up & remove with a dry terry cloth towel, a little simple green or any non abrasive household cleaner may help. I had some left over adhesive on my wheels & used the bug & tar stuff, got the gob done but I don't think I would use it on the paint.........

Re: How To Remove Adhesive Residue

Rubbing alcohol sometimes works. If not, Ronsonol lighter fluid (naptha) will get it off. WD-40 works too, but it leaves behind a film that necessitates washing afterwards.

It sounds like your RL hasn't been waxed yet, so I would follow up removing the residue with a good coat of wax. You might even want to clay it to remove any residual brake dust from shipping. I clayed my new RL about a week after I got it and was amazed at the amount of rusty colored powder that came off.

I removed the delar decal and used WD40 to clean it up. Worked great.

Re: How To Remove Adhesive Residue

I used a very small amount of zippo lighter fluid on a very soft rag and it all came right up. I used WD-40 before but it left a film that I had to clean up with lighter fluid. Just remember not to smoke while you are doing it. OH and welcome to the Ridgeline family.

Goo Gone works great on any kind of adhesive and/or road tar. I usually go around my vehicle with GG and get all the tar off before I wax. Doesn't seem to leave any residue...plus it smells nice.

Re: How To Remove Adhesive Residue

Appreciate all the good advice, everyone! I ended up using a squirt of WD40 on a soft rag, and it came right off. I actually ended up calling the local talk radio car guy, and that was what he recommended. He also hit me with a trivia question, which I got right and won a prize! I don't know what I won, though (think it might be a free oil change).

Re: How To Remove Adhesive Residue

Cleaner wax worked really well on my Black Ridge when I removed the Plasitic chrome things.
