2017-2020 broken tailgate harness causes backup camera failure

Moderator's note: There is now a recall for this issue. See this post.

2018 Touring:
Tailgate wiring exposed in hinge. Plastic cover has split/separated, may never have been attached correctly.
I'll let the dealer fix this before I take it apart again, installing my Pop & Lock.

Update: Dealer has ordered new tailgate (camera) wiring harness

OK, we think we get the point, you have come here to bash Hondas?

Just received Recall notice for my 2019 RL. Called the dealer and they wanted to bring the car in to inspect. They cannot get a replacement part with out taking a picture and sending it to the regional manager who has the authority to order the part.

This is the third recall I have had on my 2019 RL. I have owned all makes and models of automobiles for over 60 years and not one has more that one recall. I will never buy another Honda. Even my Ford was not this bad.
Ford had, by far, the most recalls of any auto mfr last year...

Good luck!
I am not here to bash Honda. I love the RL and the way it drives. I live about 60 miles from the closet dealer and for me drive that distance to take a picture and then back again to get the part installed takes a whole lot out of my time. I had the same issue with the hood and the gas pump. Also, the maintenance is a nightmare. I had a 2002 Tundra with 200,000+ miles I traded for my RL.
I only was required to change the transmission oil once not every $30,000 miles. I never changed the rear axle fluid. Also, never had a recall. I bought a 2020 Murano the same day I bought my RL for the wife. She had twice the mileage as my RL and not a bit of trouble. It just seems like Honda is not building them like they use to.

If I'm not mistaken all cars have multiple recalls.

Anectodally, the 3 Fords I drove were the worse cars I owned. 2 from the 90's and 1 from early 2000s. One of the Taurus's always had a CEL on. Subaru has been my favorite car to own, I miss my 5sp Impreza. I sold it to get my RL though.
Has anyone received the new harness even if their backup camera is working? The recall notice came in the mail and the dealer texted me, but I don't want to make the trip if they are going to tell me I am not eligible for the repair because my camera is working.
The recalls states that Honda will only replace harnesses where the camera is inoperable, otherwise, Honda will notify owners as replacement harnesses become available. So, there appears to be little reason to take in your Ridgeline with a working camera until Honda makes notification that parts are available?

Thank you, Bill. Right on. The dealer text threw me, I should know better. I'll sit tight and enjoy my trouble free ride. No need to make a voluntary dealer trip....

If they have, I don't think anyone's reported it. It sounds like the replacements are being prioritized to those who have inoperable cameras. In fact, I want to say I read somewhere (too lazy to search at the moment) that someone did a DIY fix on their harness and Honda won't authorize a replacement yet because it's still technically working...

If a trip to the dealership is onerous for you, I'd probably wait until you have another reason to be at the dealership, or until the camera stops working, whichever comes first ;)

Hee hee, I will lay odds that I have you all beat here of having the vehicle with the most recalls?

This was Polaris' first, and I believe so far the only, foray into the world of an on-road vehicle, and we with the 2015's were definitely the test pilots! But, even with these initial teething problems, we still brought it to Montana with us because we are not willing to give it up............................yet!

Doesn't the Maverick have something like 48 TSBs?

My brother's Polaris four-wheeler is always in the shop. When it goes to the shop, he uses his backup, a 1983 Honda Big Red three-wheeler for doing the farm chores. That three-wheeler just keeps running, even though most of the body has fallen apart around it.

OTOH, I knew some contractors that used both Honda and Polaris four-wheelers in their work. They said the Hondas never broke down, the Polarises (Polari?) were always in the shop, but they still preferred Polaris due to the nice ride. They had a good working relationship with their Polaris shop.
I have a 01' Bombardier Traxter 500. It's a push button manual shift. (has no CVT drive system) It has never been in the shop for anything as long as I've owned it. I do the oil changes infrequently (maybe 3 x in 20 years) and it's been a great Quad. The Visco lock AWD system means no push buttons and it has more in common with a Audi Quattro on the drive system for AWD. It's really something in the mud and going over obsticles (never spins the tires that can be standing in the air over logs). It has a full skid plate on the bottom of it made of STEEL. It's really a utility machine and I've towed logs with it. Not small logs either. BIG suckers lol It's pretty impressive. (I like it a lot.. if you haven't noticed lol)
Has anyone experienced an issue with their trunk lock, no longer functioning with the key fob due to this? I can only unlock my trunk with the manual key in the fob now. 2017 BE

Not related. Check the switch in the glovebox.
Hey All,

Just wanted to put this out here if you have not already received your recall notice, but it looks like Honda finally realized it's a problem and is recalling the harness.
It also looks like they have a reimbursement option for those when have fixe it before the recall was issued.

Just got mine a few weeks ago and have to call to see what they will offer me for fixing it myself.

Thanks

Edit- I missed the message above that already mentioned this lol, my bad.
Edit: Never mind, missed the above messages too!
Has anybody yet received notice to take their Ridgeline in to replace the harness?
