Acoustic windshield strength

My RL will hit 10k miles on Sunday. So far the only issues have been TPMS is busted but I think Big 0 screwed it up. Dealer is taking care of it next week and the other being my windshield is already busted. Huge crack down the middle. I am assuming it's from normal road debris flying around but does anyone else have the acoustic windshield with damage already?

Took a rock yesterday and no damage. It was from a passing dump truck. Big and slow enough I could see it. I would think the acoustic windshield would be thicker but that may not mean anything either. I've also seen windshields crack within days of being installed and they replaced it for free.

Following distance sometimes plays a factor.
As wierd as this sounds I read the acoustic windshield is thinner than the regular one. .2mm thinner
A couple of question I have if anyone knows...Since the acoustic windshield is new to Honda, I would assume we have to take it to the dealer to replace it? Does your insurance cover replacement based on a $100 deductible even if it's repaired at a Honda dealership? Would Safelite have the ability in the future to replace the acoustic windshield once more replacement parts are available?
I have an RTL with about 7,000 miles and have a chip in the windshield from a couple weeks ago. [email protected] highway construction everywhere with trucks hauling aggregate and picking up stones in their tires from construction sites. Need something like a cell phone screen protector as a outer windshield layer that is a cheap tearaway when damaged.

Oh crap, I just invented it, will make a fortune! Ok, I only thought of it so far, has to be easy the design, produce, market and sell. Easy street, here I come!

I think I have seen something like that on race cars.
I wonder if Honda went with the incorporation of Corning's Gorilla glass that first appeared in Ford's GT sport car? I believe I read BMW will soon introduce cars with this feature. It is thinner, stronger, lighter and has much less optical distortion than regular glass.

The Ridgeline windshield has struck me as being weak, or maybe it is its angle. I don't really know. I am on my third Ridgeline windshield and that is more than all of the windshields ever replaced in my previous vehicles collectively, which were driven in the same area and conditions.
I don't know how to post a link but googling "2017 Honda Ridgeline press kit" leads you to a wealth of technical info on our trucks. The glass info is interesting. Honda makes no claim that the acoustic windshield is stronger. It does say the laminate layer in the acoustic windshield is "acoustic PVB" while the plain windshield is "regular PVB". There's info on all the glass and comparisons to the gen 1 glass except windshield.

Gen 2 acoustic windshield: Outer 2.0mm safety
Laminate .7mm acoustic PVB
inner 1.8mm safety

Gen 2 standard windshield: Outer 2.0mm safety
Laminate .7mm PVB
inner 2.0mm safety

Gen 2 side windows 5.0mm safety
Gen 1 side windows 3.1mm safety

Gen 2 rear glass 4.0mm safety
Gen 1 rear glass 3.1mm safety

The dealer will probably produce a ballpoint pen and roll it along the windshield crack to see if he can find the impact spot from road debris. If there is no chip on the outside and it looks like the crack maybe from bad install, I'd be looking for a replacement under warranty.

Safelite would be able to replace it. They just have to order it from Honda, due to it being new. I was getting a cracked windshield replaced for our '13 Avalon and spoke with the manager at Safelite about the Honda RL windshield. She looked it up and said that it was currently only available from Honda; however, was certain that it would be available within 6-12 months. Until then, the insurance would have to cover the cost of the OE (at least most....read your fine print....). I just casually asked about what an OE for the Avalon would be, as my insurance states specifically that if aftermarket meeting spec is available, that I would have to pay the difference if I went OE, and she looked it up...said $900 out of pocket to me!:surprise: She also said that aftermarket was actually matching the 'acoustic' windshields for other vehicles and customers on high end M-B's, etc., had not made any complaints when they replaced OE with aftermarket. Our Avalon supposedly had a noise insulating windshield from the factory. Haven't noticed a difference with the OE, and neither has the wife.

This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.

Yikes on the price but good to know. Thanks for the info.
My RTL-T windshield is cracked down the middle from the wiper hitting it

You can see my post about it here: http://www.ridgelineownersclub.com/...on-t-make-same-mistake-i-did.html#post2168218
I took a rock to the windshield about a month ago up in Denali. We get a lot of rocks hit our CRV and only got one small ding. This was the first to hit the Ridgeline and it was a good solid star shaped crack. Typical sized pebble, couldn't see it coming, just the noise and the crack appeared.

I'm a stickler for a super clean windshield. I have glass cleaner and shammys always so it was annoying to have.

Safelite came out and took care of it within a couple of hours and you can see a tiny little dot that most wouldn't be able to see. I'm happy with their service but still annoyed that my windshield isn't pristine.

I'm not sure if it's the material or the angle of the windshield that could be in question but cracked windshields are a way of life in Alaska especially for trucks.
I went through more replacement windshields in my first-generation Ridgelines than all my other vehicles combined!

When the rear, sliding glass in my 2007 spontaneously exploded without external cause, Honda wouldn't fix it under warranty placing the burden on me and my insurance company. State Farm paid for the very expensive repair to dismantle much of the interior in order to replace the enter rear window assembly (at the time, the center portion wasn't available separately).

By the time I bought my 2010, aftermarket windshields were available. State Farm only pays for aftermarket, so I had to pay an extra $250 out of pocket for a Honda-branded windshield.

I'm hoping my 2017 Ridgline "breaks" the trend of frequent, broken glass.

All 2016 Civic have "acoustic" windshields. There was no aftermarket glass available. My brother had to wait several weeks for a replacement windshield after a rock cracked his. State Farm paid for the OEM glass in this case.

Like he said or better known as Stress Crack. You can do the ballpoint pen test at home prior to going to dealer. If the ballpoint stops, it means that's where the impact happened. If you get a smooth ballpen flow from one end of the crack to the other, then you should have a stress crack and covered under warranty. Happened to me with my 2008 CRV.
2017 ridgeline owners with non-impact front windshield cracking issues -

email me at [email protected]

for some information

i cannot post here.
I have already had to replace a windshield cracked by a tiny rock from a minivan that I wasn't following close. Cost was $700+ for the windshield so I had to pay my $500 deductible.
Thanks God there's no deductible for a windshield in Florida.
