2018 Ridgeline, base "head unit". I have reprogrammed the voice recognition for the phone 20 times at least and still it works for a while then I get "Pardon" or "Go back" when I say "call xxxx". I had the head unit and microphone replaced under warranty but that only worked for a few weeks. Totally frustrating, anyone else have this issue?

I had "trouble" with my 2010 Accord EX-L. There's nothing wrong with it, but I wonder the logic behind it. Aside from what you mentioned, a simple command as "Call Home" would ask me if I want to call "Robert." The two words are not even close. I'm not perfect with English, but sometimes it was such a struggle that I just dial it from my phone. It was less frustrating.

I gave up on the Honda voice commands long ago. I just hold down the voice command button until I hear the Siri tone and tell Siri who to call, Siri gets it right most of the time.

The base unit in my 2017 RTL does the same thing. I never had it fixed, figured it was me not using it properly.

I only call three or four numbers from the car with any regularity, so have those loaded on speed dial and it works well.

One of many reasons why I replaced my HU. I didn't even have 500 miles on it, but it had to go!

I doubt self-contained voice recognition tech (like what's in RL HU) will ever be as good as "cloud-enhanced" tech like Alexa, Google, or Siri. The latter has the ability to learn and adapt to your voice(s), and leverage the bigger "horsepower" of cloud computing vs what's in your pickup for recognition. Of course, the cost of this is that your voice samples are sent to the cloud to make this possible, bringing along the double-edged sword of privacy concerns.
The trend for auto infotainment systems is for online, always connected systems, which will also allow things like Alexa Auto (and Google, Siri) tech to be embedded directly into the vehicle. This may allow for learning/micro-updating such that much of the functionality can still be used when off-line (out of coverage areas).

I actually think the voice recognition works great - for a couple weeks - then just has some issue that makes it lose my voice input. So it's not poor voice recognition, it's a system that routinely resets itself somehow. Sounds like I'm not alone though. I'm just surprised that the dealership changed out the head unit under warranty when this must be a known software/firmware issue and not hardware? Still, they get paid by Honda regardless.

OH MY! I'm glad I'm not the only one. If I say "call Bill," or whatever, it will either "not recognize" my voice, and thus say "Pardon," or else it will "recognize," but then say "call Frank?" or something (i.e. a contact that phonetically is not even close, as another poster said). OR, it will "recognize" my voice, but then give a list of like 6 contacts, "Bill" being perhaps one of them, but "Frank," "Tom," "Joe," etc. as other choices, that are not even CLOSE to "Bill" in terms of pronunciation. It's just ABYSMAL. Like another poster said, I just plug the phone in and use CarPlay, and Siri usually gets it right. But the Honda system? Essentially useless.

Yes, bought a 2019 with ultra low mileage and it has never worked. No matter what. I haven't really missed it because I "talk" to my phone to get tasks done but if you pay for the technology...

I have 2017 RT with base radio. I was periodically having the same issue after I programmed in voice tags. I would hit the call button on the steering wheel, the Honda robot lady would say "Say a command" I would say "Call John" and the number named John I programmed into my Honda speed dial list would be called.
After a few days when I said "call John" it would say "pardon?" and not recognize the name, and I noticed the on my dashboard display, under speed dial and then my address list that a little face icon no longer appeared next to the name in my address book, meaning it no longer had a voice tag. Not sure what caused it to disappear. So I programmed in a voice tag (vocal name) again for each of the 20 names in my speed dial list. The icon appeared next to the name and voice dialing worked again. For a few days. Then one day I said "call John" it said "pardon?" and not recognize the name, and again I noticed the icon gone next to the names in the speed dial list.
Somehow the names I vocally recorded for each name in the address list was lost again, even though the names and phone numbers were still in the speed dial list.

So, I had the dealer update my bluetooth software per TSB 18-123 on 3-24-2022. Time will tell if the voice tags stay put and don't disappear a few days after programming them.

Mine did that exact same thing. I threw in the towel and just use my Iphone to call people and then just use the truck to talk to them. Less hassle as we already know the radio in the lower end ones was just plain ole' cheapO

2019 Touring here … voice recognition absolutely useless. Gave up on that completely. Also find navigation hopeless as well. Mine will not find streets that are even close by. Search Bank Street and it might find one 500 km away, or it might find Rue Bank (language setting is English). Called both Garmin and Honda … neither can offer any solution. The head unit is a disgrace. My son has an 18 Odyssey, which has a much better unit. The only thing I dislike on the vehicle, and it is unthinkable that the 2022s still have this same head unit. Cheers, Mike

I have a 2020 Ridgeline that I bought new the voice command worked good for awhile then it stop working. It keeps telling me it didn't hear a command. I brought it into the dealer they tell me it's my phone. Then he demonstrates how it works with the techs Apple phone. But not with my Samsung Droid. There is nothing wrong with my phone I have a 2014 Jeep wrangler and the voice command works flawlessly everytime. There's a flaw in their system that they don't know how to fix!
Isn't funny they didn't tell me when I bought the Ridgeline that the voice command wouldn't work with my Android phone but now that I spent $40,000 now they tell me it's my phone and they won't do anything for me.

I have to reprogram it each time I get an update to a phone, iPhone or Android. They both give it amnesia.
I think that is the issue with mine as well, the voice tags seem to stay until Apple pushes a software update to my iphone 13, then my phone still connects automatically and my speed dial list is there, but the voice tags are gone (no little head silhouette next to the speed dial name) and I have to add them again. BTW mine is the basic radio with the 5" screen.
Also, I just go notice of another Hondalink recall -I will be going to the dealer 3-22-2023 to see what that is about.
