Auto light setting and high beams

15973 Views 12 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  eddiep1722
I have my lights set on "auto", but even when on a dark country road with no other source of light my high beams illuminate only with my manually hitting the control lever. I just received the owner's manual and can not find any information on adjusting the auto light setting to include the activation of high beams when appropriate. Am I missing something or is this not an available feature?

Are your auto high beams turned on? Should have a green light with an A in it? If not, pull turn signal lever towards you and that should turn them on.

Also make sure there is nothing on the dash that can reflect light up off the wind shield into the camera. There is also a sensitivity setting
pg 313 "lighting setup"
Which model are you driving? Auto hi-low beam is only in higher level models. The 'auto' setting in my Sport only turns headlight on and off based on ambient light.

Is an RTL-E, no obstruction blocking sensor or object on dash, and no green light with an "A" in it. I have pulled the turn signal lever toward me every time I have needed the high beams. They work fine, but I need to figure out how to activate the auto high beams.
One quick pull to flash the high beams should set auto-high beams. Above the headlights indicator, the auto-high beam icon should illuminate.

I went outside, started truck and positioned it pointing away from house facing total darkness. The engine is idling and gear selector is in park. The lights are set to "Auto" and on the right side of gauges I see an icon consisting of 2 opposed small green lights. When I quickly pull and release the turn signal lever the blue high beam indicator comes on and goes off in association with the flash of the high beams, but I see no symbol of a light with an "A" in it. My high beams are not illuminated. Am I missing something here? Do I need to be moving at speeds greater than 15 mph when I do this to activate the auto-high beam system?

From the owners manual, speeds must be 25 mph or higher:

Hope this helps!

I was just screenshotting the manual and someone has beat me to it. That why this forum is awesome. Anyway, you may need to actually enable to system (pull the stalk and hold it there for about 30 seconds until the green auto high beam icon blinks). If you pull too long, about 40 secs, it disables the system - blinks twice I think, I don't remember anymore.

It's not a perfectly performing system, but if I paid for auto-high beams I may as well enable them.

I have a 2017 Ridgeline RTL-E. I had a service at Apple Tree Honda here in Asheville NC recently and shortly after the service, while driving home on I40 West at and night, I almost wrecked as the light switch had been turned off AUTO by the service technician. I had driven from a well lighted road into total darkness on sidelights. I brought this to the attention of the service manager but they were not interested. Has any other owner experienced this problem?

I’ve taken mine in several times and one of the things they do is turn off the AUTO headlight switch. With the tech driving it from the parking lot into the shop, performing the work, possible short test drive( but then again, maybe not), then back to the parking lot. If your battery happened to be on the weak side, this might just kill it. I've just learned to check the switch and turn it back to auto. One issue is the dash lights come on irregardless of headlight use and it gives the driver the sense that the headlights are on, I’ve been there and done that too!
sort of tangential, but found this article interesting:

Beamforming is all the rage in the EMI tech world, from Wifi, Cellular, to Satellite internet (Starlink)... Interesting to see it applied to adaptive lighting systems.
No - the automatic high beam feature is either on or off - there's no sensitivity adjustment. It doesn't work by measuring light levels like old systems from the 1950s to 1990s; instead, it attempts to identify headlights and taillights of other vehicles based on their color, size, position, shape, spacing, and location. The feature has been essentially broken and dangerous since the 2020 model year. I suggest filing a complaint with NHTSA in hopes that some day Honda will issue a fix.

My low beams are led from the factory. I'm still trying to decide what to use to update the high beams, turn signals, and license plate to led...
