Backup Lights Out

3188 Views 29 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  phineas
I have a 2014 Ridgeline and suddenly both back-up lights went out. I checked the fuse box and there weren't any blown fuses. Before I check the bulbs I was wondering if anyone had anything else to suggest. All other lights are working fine.

Check backup light switch . I'm thinking it's on the tranny.

That makes sense. OP are these the original bulbs or did you replace them?
Yes, these are the original bulbs. If I have to replace them, is there a certain brand or type that you recommend? Should I just stay with OEM? Regarding the backup light switch, is that something that I can replace?
I would replace them anyways.i have V-LEDS in mine. Like having a small pair of headlights back there.
And yes you could if you have basic knowledge and basic tools. You would have liked to locate it. Buuttt, make sure you just didn't have the dumb luck and have both bulbs st once?

Thanks for the info. Where did you get the bulbs, and where is the switch? I've tried the manual and Google and there doesn't seem to be anything that shows where it's located.
I can't speak for the Ridgeline, but I have seen some vehicles with the reverse lights wired in series, so if one goes out they both go out. Also, it is possible one burned out a while ago and you never noticed, until the second one burned out. I would second the idea of switching to LED anyway. Check all the other tail lights. They do use a common ground (G602 and G602).

Good point about one burning out first and not noticing. Can I get the LED version at most auto parts stores? I haven't pulled the assembly off yet, to look at the bulbs. That's next. Again I appreciate the advice.
I haven't seen anything decent in the automotive parts stores, but you could probably find in a specialty/mod store. I think you're probably better off waiting a couple of days on an Amazon order. These are what I put in and am very happy with them.

If you get LED's, remember that they are "directional" and possibly test before closing up, the rear taillight housing

That's great. I just ordered these yesterday. Glad to find someone who has installed them successfully.
By directional you mean polarity directional, right? If at first they don't work, and then turn them the other way so the leads switch?

EXACTLY, multiple posts here including a recent one with a G1 member who's license plate lights were out once replaced. And several LED replacement light kits on Amazon addressing the same thing
OK, I've checked the bulbs and they are fine. I called the dealer and they are not aware of a "back-up" light switch. I'm still wondering if it could be a fuse. According to the manual, there are two fuses labelled back up. One is under the "primary under hood box" and the other is in the "interior" fuse box. Those 2 fuses were fine. Does anyone know of any other fuses I should be checking?
A third fuse is very unlikely. How do you know the first two aren't bad? Looks can be deceiving.

There has to be a switch for the backup lights but it might be logical or on the shifter.

If the fuses and bulbs are good, I say you get a professional's help.
I replaced both fuses with new ones and the lights still did not work. Time for the pros:)
There has to be a switch!! The circuit has to be turned on and off somehow.
Most Honda automatics have the switch on the tranny somewhere. Look for i think a sensor or plug with minimum of two but no more then 4 wires on the trans.

It looks like the back up light switch is in what they call the transmission range switch, on the transmission. Location, test and replacement attached

@SK17touring wow, this is great! Where did you get this? It almost looks like it's from a service manual. I'd love to get the service manual for the G2 Ridgeline.
To correct myself, it looks like the range switch on the transmission tells a switch/relay in the MICU to turn the back up lamps on. So if power is going through the switch on the transmission, it could be wiring beyond that or the MICU.

Phineas, yes it is service manual. I'd love a G2 manual as well, but don't expect to see them in public hands for a couple of years yet. I don't know what Honda's release history is like.
