Battery booster/jump starter pack

Any of you guys use one of these or recommend a particular size? Battery booster
This is the list from Autozone, but Sam's had a combo 450amp booster and inflator for $49.99. I've got some good 4 guage jumper cables that I usually keep in the Ridgeline, but I was wondering if one of these gizmos would be a good thing to have and what power I might need.

Would a 450 amp fire up the Ridgeline if the battery went out? I think our battery is rated 600 or 700 amps, isn't it?

I tried charging mine last night, and it's shot. Another piece of junk I have to dump. I don't think Best Buy will accept the whole unit as 'recycled battery'. I guess I could open it up, only 4 screws, take out the battery, recycle it, and throw the rest in the trash.

Had my eye on the Clore also.
what is the promo code for 20 off, if you know ?
The coupon came in the mail with their sale flyer and I tossed it. If you have a store near you, they may offer you the deal if you ask for it. I have done that at my local store and the Mgr always has spare coupons available.
Of course, I have spent a ton on generators with him also.........
One other tidbit on this one, you can add a bigger/stronger battery if you wish.

Rollin,

Do you have a Batteries Plus near you? Likely that you could get the battery replaced there. At the very least, they'll probably take the failed battery for recycle.

No problem getting it recycled there, or Best Buy. I got the battery out. It is just a 9AH rating. The bolts on the terminals must have been tightened by the same guy that tightens up the drain bolts on Honda transmissions.

I'll check on the battery at Batteries Plus for kicks but chances are I'll just go for a new unit.

don't feel like driving for this one, about 2 hr one way to nearest store, easier to pay the 15 UPS delivery but online they may not honor the price off since it's technically 99.99 today
ordered a couple of these from HF today, $6 flat rate shipping

I didn't read all the replies, but I have a Peak brand 450A that I bought from Walmart for about $70-80 a couple years ago. It worked fine for my CR-V and now for my Ridgeline as well. Fits perfectly in the space between the driver and passenger seats (if you don't use it for anything else). Also comes with inflator so u can inflate tires easily from your driveway if you don't already have a separate unit for this.
I just got the Clore 300XL... it's their smallest unit, but still has a 12aH battery and 4 ga. cables. Only $48 at Amazon.. I've seen them elsewhere for $70+.

My old jumper had a 9 aH and did me well for just over 4 years, considering I kept forgetting to keep it charged.

I see NAPA has their version of the JNC300XL for $40:

It certainly looks the same! Amazing price! I'd jump at it if you need a compact one that will still do the job for 99% of the time. At that price you could put one in each vehicle.

But it is not the same, Amazon sells that one for $32!! It is the CS1000.

After reading the description the cables are 6ga not 4ga. Also, the warranty is 6 months, on mine it is 1 year plus $50 after that for any repair, even if you broke it, for life.
Good catch. I thought they were the same.
Certainly surprised me at first glance.
It does not seem to be that different inside. I am surprised at the lousy reviews compared with the 300XL at Amazon. I would not expect it to be that different in performance. Of course, I know customers reviews on some of these websites is questionable.
The wife got me a Schumacher 400 amp jump starter for Christmas. As I have read, this is on the low end of what would be adequate power. Was reading thru the information packet and something caught my eye - 'Do not permit the internal battery of the Instant power to freeze' I thought that statement was odd considering most folks will have the unit in their vehicles and a lot of the time the temp will be below freezing in the truck.

Also, what can happen if you put the negative directly to the battery and not the ground cable(if the vehicle jumped has one) or unpainted metal under the hood. My son says that he used them all of the time at a ford dealershipl and they just hooked up straight positive and negative. Will not do this, but just curious.
The danger is a battery explosion caused by the hydrogen gas generated by the battery igniting from the spark generated when you connect the lead.

If I don't have a reasonable place to put the negative lead, I just connect to the battery's negative terminal.
:mad::confused::confused:

someone got me a new JNC660.

the directions specifically state *TO NOT OVERCHARGE* the unit but leave out conveniently making a clear defintion (fuzzy logic ... if more than one jumpstart.... one hour.....etc) of what that means.

I also states in the OM to charge initially for 24 hours. Ok, can do that, only problem is, the voltage indicator shows 13.4 and Green LED is ON when plugging in an AC powercord. Yellow LED means charging and Green means it is no longer charging.

Me very confused, I thought this unit had intelligence built-in so that it could NOT be overcharged ?

That is correct. The JNC660 was changed in May 2010 to include smart charging by 120v AC current.

I believe you are mis-reading the instructions. For JNC4000 and OLDER JNC660 (without autocharging), you have to monitor the charge cycle. Same if you use the included 12v adapter.

But the newer JNC660 (post May 2010 dom) have auto charging and cannot be overcharged via 120v AC current.

It is not worded very well, imo. I think they need to rework that section of the OM.

Ok

Insofar as to voltage, is the 13.4 max value or can the unit be charged higher as the Green LED is ON immediately upon unpack and plugged to AC
If the green LED is on, 13.4 is probably tops. I left mine on the charger for 24 hours when I first got it, but it didn't need it. You can leave it on the AC charger indefinitely.
