Camera in tailgate handle.

I ordered a tailgate handle with the camera hole in it. I have seen that some people have done this mod on their own. Can anyone out there who has done this mod please tell me how they ran the wires out of the tailgate for the camera. I'm having a hard time trying to figure it out.

Thanks for any input you can give and pictures would be nice to if you have any.

I installed the Kenwood CMOS-310 recently in the 09 handle. I just lined it up inside the handle and used the two screw holes in the back of the handle to secure it in place with a piece of aluminium. I then packed it with silicone to keep it in place. If you pop off the plastic foot trim in side the rear left door, you will see a hole that has a black plastic plug on it. I ran my wires through this hole and secured it under the bed with tiewraps. From inside run the wires under the foot trim inside the drivers door and up front. Buy 14' of 1/4" wire wrap for under the bed and bring it up in the lower left tailgate corner.

PS consider the $10 DIY tailgate lock at the same time and the wires will run together. See post 89 by Nuke83

Here's a link to a thread on a complete aftermarket install.

Aside from going wireless as some have, there are two ways to do it.

1) I did mine pretty much the same way Heli did above.

2) and the way Honda recommends: http://www.handa-accessories.com/ridgeline/backupcamera.pdf (dont pay any attention to steps 31-39, thats for the oldschool OEM camera. Also steps 62 on will depend on how you plan to view the image -- NAV system, aftermarket monitor, etc.)

Here I go again....

can someone show me the SKU or exact item description so when I go to Radio Shack and ask the guy or gal for a '12 volt in-line 8.4 ohm reducer' that I get the correct part?? Did I say that correctly? I am admittedly NOT electronically inclined but read somewhere (can't find it now) that this part will prevent my fourth security camera 2000 from melting down and fading to black.

whoever else has a sc2k and this reducer please chime in?? a link will be much appreciated.

I am still ahead by swapping out these cheap cameras for the higher end kenwwod or alpine aftermarket cameras...but this will be my last time buying this model.
That would be me...

I didn't look at radio shack, I got mine at Fry's Electronics. There the number is QW8D2-25. It's a 1/4 Watt 8.2 ohm resistor with 5% tolorance. PM your address and I'll send you one.
the website is no longer. Can I use the factory camera in the door handle or do I have to get a new one

Which factory camera are you referring to?
The one that goes in the tailgate
You need to be more specific. What year truck do you have? What camera do you have? What handle are you trying to put the camera in? If you are looking at the 2009 handle, you will need an 18mm diameter camera. These can be found on Ebay for under $20.

If you want to add a lock then use the 2019 handle and locking mechanism. For this you will need a 22.5mm camera (again this camera is under $20 on Ebay) and you can refer to my other post here: You Need a lock for your tailgate but fed up with... for what you’ll need for that.

Ahhhh so you have the Ridgelines early attempt at a backup camera (08B21-SJC-102) you won’t be able to reuse that camera, but you would have another issue to deal with…the four holes that are currently in your tailgate. I think with the OEM camera you have (the wort as it was affectionately known) you have three 8mm holes with blind nuts and one 10mm hole for the wiring. You’ll have to figure out how you want to patch those.

The one that goes into the handle would be similar to this (assuming you want to use a 2009 handle on your 2006, you still have not confirmed this is the handle you want to use) Auto Rear View Backup Camera Bumper 18mm Hole Saw Drilling Hole Mount Waterproof 612032292485 | eBay (posted just as an example of what the camera should look like)

If you have the navigation unit, you’ll have some more work to do. I think the OEM camera was a slightly different voltage rating than the one I linked

There are plenty of folks that wired aftermarket cameras to the nav unit. You can use the search function to see how they did it.

I used a small monitor mounted near the drivers side mirror, so mine was plug-and-play.

Yup, That was one of the worst design after thoughts Honda had
