I have yet to use a code tool as most of my vehicles can give basic information on problem areas by using the key in a certain sequence and counting flashes.
I can take that info and run from there, but figured since I love tools, why not.

After several days of researching Code Scanners, I got tired of trying to determine 'Best' all around tool.
My latest search landed me on AUTOPHIX E-SCAN ES710.... Link, so I pulled the trigger.
I got it for $103 w/ shipping so we shall see how it does.

I did notice that a jumper wire will work at retrieving codes on our Ridgelines also.
They sell a factory jumper, but on some Honda/Acura forums several posted that they got their codes with just a paperclip.
I wouldn't be inclined to do it so much as you can buy a factory jumper for around $4 bucks...lol.

Again....A 20.00 code scanner will get you your codes easily also and google the code works wonders.

Item arrived today so I've been playing with it.
I can tell I have a lot to learn as it gave me tons of info on the truck using the Honda side of this unit.
I can see just about every sensors voltage; readings and impedance. It was information overload and I enjoyed it....lol.
That would be handy troubleshooting a O2 sensor for example as you could tell which one was bad before ever popping the hood.

The only code I could find was one for a rear impact that I received recently.
That's interesting as no air bags were deployed.

It also showed that my batteries are low in all 4 of my TPMS sensors, so I need to look into that soon.

I played with the live graph of the coolant temp and fuel trims.
The fuel trim graph looked just like a heartbeat monitor...lol

Cool! Sounds like your new scanner has access to more data than those using Torque pro or in my case Blue Driver. Seeing TPMS battery level for instance.

Short term fuel trims should be up and down. Your long tern fuel trims should be fairly consistent and relatively close to zero. My 06 has it's long term trims between +3-4% which is in "normal" range. I do wonder if the 10% Ethanol+winter blend gas that we are stuck with here in the MidAtlantic is responsible for the consistently positive low level adding of fuel to the base map. If you have access to E and non E gas it would be interesting to see the effect on fuel trims.

I wonder how much difference there is because he has a 2009 RL? (CANBUS protocol). Us 2006-2008 owners have the older 9141-2 protocol. And I hope to find out (before I die) how Honda got around the federal requirement for all MY 2008 and newer vehicles to have the CANBUS protocol. ;)

The OBD2 side of this unit appears to be a normal OBD2 reader from the research that I've done.

Now the Honda side of this appears that I can see all the live data that the PCM receives which is awesome.

It's hard to explain, but I'm in the process of recording live data and will post some of here.

I'm not even going to post data from the PGM-F1 as it would take several pages of post to list.
I can see the function/information of every switch; relay; sensor and more that's installed in the RL
I quickly looked at the O2 sensors and it shows voltage to; voltage from and the impedance of each sensor, so that would be a quick troubleshoot.

I need to record/print all this info then get the wife to drive me and record that so I can have a good base line to pull from.
Too cool. That's a good find, does it work with any other vehicle type or just Honda? It will pay for itself with the first unfailed component you change because you weren't sure what the problem was.

I've been using a $12 bluetooth OBDII reader with free iPhone software (EngineLink, OBDCarDoctor) but it is pretty dopey compared to what you have.

Yeah, from the screen menu, select the OBD2 icon and it will do other vehicles just like a normal OBD2 scan tool.
Go into the Honda icon and it's information overload...lol.
Definitely worth $100 from what I'm seeing

My point about the protocol is that I believe the CANBUS protocol opens up more available info than I can get with the 9141-2 protocol.
Yes the Honda side of this unit is using (CAN).
I tried to catch/verify the protocol on the OBD2 side of the unit but it flashed to fast.

Edit: I know a guy that has a 08', next time he's in town I'll snag him.
It would be interesting just to see what it does on his truck.
I am using the Blue Driver bluetooth unit and software on my Iphone. It provides more data with my wife's 2009 Audi than it does with my 2006 Ridgeline but I don't know if that is a result of brand specifics or the change over to CAN?

It's actually a pretty impressive hardware / program combination able to provide repair reports with suggested fixes, and a smog readiness check. It also is very easy to send the live data log via email (etc) in a spreadsheet format. I have attached a live data log from a recent run in my 06 Ridgeline. I selected only some of the available data points. One thing that I noticed on this run with the slight discrepancy between Bank1 and Bank2 long term fuel trims. Truck has 110k miles on it and I have already replaced the easy to get to Bank 2 before and after sensors so the higher trim in Bank1(Rear) may be as a result of the older sensors. It could of course be any number of things. . .

Blue Driver is constantly updating their software / hardware so hopefully they will continue to improve the product for Honda use.

The same manufacturer makes another scanner just for VW/Audi.......Link.
I think I saw it on Amazon.
Just recorded the ABS, 42 lines of info so not going to list them.
Everything else is also showing lots of info, so I'm not going to post.

That's a nice scanner tool.

Interesting to note that TPMS triggers are 25PSI (to come on), and 29PSI to go back off again. I was always curious about that.

Thanks, I just hope it holds up. It was sent on a fast plane from China....lol.

Yep, the triggers caught my eye right off the bat also so I had to convert them.
I was always wondering the same thing. It's good to know for sure.

It's ISO 15765-4 CAN (29 bit)

I like the idea of sending a live data log.
I can only access my info when the unit is plugged into the vehicle or a computer for power input.
After looking at your fuel trims, I thought I would access my saved file.

I have a lot to learn, but this is what mine shows.

Short Bank 1... 9.4%
Short Bank 3... -33.6%
Long Bank 1... 10.2
Long Bank 3... -33.6%
Short Bank 2... 7.8%
Short Bank 4... -33.6%
Long Bank 2... 7.8%
Long Bank 4... -33.6%

Not sure what it means with Bank 3 or 4

Catalyst Temp Bank 1 sensor 1 .. 948*F
Catalyst Temp Bank 2 sensor 1 .. 948*F

I think the next numbers are averages

Short Term Fuel Trim (B1-S2) 9.4%
Short Term Fuel Trim (B2-S2) 7.0%

Gonna throw a pic of O2 sensors up to help me with a visual.

Edit: Truck has 40k miles, no error codes and runs great. I average 18.5-19.5 mpg mixed driving.
Edit2: Numbers were taken while parked & idle.
