Denicio DelToro's MX4 Install

Greetings Earthlings!

I opted to create a specific thread about my Tonneau Cover and leave the MEGA thread to its own devices (getting too hard to navigate for me).

Facts:
1. Purchased from Tonneau Factory Outlet
2. Waited nearly 1 month for it to be delivered (BAK is seemingly making these as ordered)
3. I DID have the nutty Bracket issues (holes drilled dont work)

Day 1 of install (Sunday) was a fast crash and burn. The holes were offset just enough that you could not mount the bracket in the very first steps. On Monday i called BAK to bitch and complain. The rep was a 6 on 10 scale of customer service. Seemed semi concerned. Put me on hold a lot. Got back to me, took my address and said will ship correct brackets fed ex. By friday i got more than brackets, i got a whole new rail assembly which was totally unnecessary. Sunday (a week from original attempt) i tried the new brackets. NO DICE! Same damn brackets. They did nothing but ship me the same mis-drilled brackets. This time i called my retailer and opted to let them fight the good fight. I called Tonneau Factory Outlet that sunday afternoon expecting to to leave a disgruntled voice mail. To my suprise Morrie (the owner) answered the phone and spent a LOT of time with me trying to learn, in detail, the issue i was having. He assured me that "THIS DOES get fixed, i got your back and wont leave you hanging". A very reassuring call. I sent Morrie pictures of the issue and he reached out to the folks at BAK. There was some back and forth with the engineers and Morrie. Then a few days later i get a small package with brackets that appear to have been modified at BAK.
These redrilled holes did the trick! So on monday night of this week i took my time and installed the rest of the cover. Once it was done i was reminded why i chose the MX4. To my eyes its a great looking cover. It does not draw any unnecessary "Hey Look at ME" attention but seemingly blends in with the truck as if it was born with the cover built in :).

Here are pictures of the Truck & Cover in my garage after the install and then on my 5 acre forest where we are about to build our new cottage.

Hopefully BAK has gotten the message about the holes and will correct this on their end. If you have any questions about this cover, feel free to ask.

Denicio

(Sorry about them being flipped. I cant figure out how to post them correctly. I simply take the pictures with my Iphone, put them on my Win10 machine and post to these forums from that computer)

I do like that tonneau. Good choice.

Thanks. I gotta tell you i labored over this decision far more than on the truck!

As you can see by the MEGA thread, every RL Owner has different needs. This one fit 90% of what i wanted.

I dont expect it to be 100% water tight nor do i expect it to be 100% theft proof.

I got over the 'fully up it blocks my view' by taking a reality check. If i gotta have it up that far then chances are the stuff in the bed is blocking my view anyhoo.

This cover gives me SUVness back, looks great and did not break the bank. Most importantly when we take our annual vacation to destin we pack in storage tubs (not suitcases) and the Costco Black and Yellow mega tubs fit perfectly underneath this cover!

Looks great! How long was installation, once you had the correct parts?

Any pictures of it folded up? And when it is folded twice, is it strong enough that you can sit on it like a bench?

Thanks!!
Dont have any folded pictures.

Personally i would NOT sit on it like a bench.
Looks good. I like the flush mount better than the OEM tonneau that I purchased with the Ridgeline. But, am still contemplating going to a Leer canopy when Pop & Lock offers the tailgate lock with a key backup option. With the MX4 folded-up do you have any concern about the rail assembly being damaged by cargo loading or unloading (like rocks)?

The photos are very much appreciated.

Well today until next saturday (week and a half) we will be moving across town. I will get to FULLY take the MX4 to task in all its configurations. So i will try and report back as the move progresses. We are hiring a moving company for the big stuff but for medium to small i am moving.

I DONT expect the rails to be a big problem. This was something i was hyper aware of while installing.

All told it took about 2 hours to install. I put the rails on and off a few times to see how the seams were fitting so i took my time and did a bit of extra geeking out during the install.
That low profile look looks great!
EXACTLY! That's why i fell in love with it. To my eyes its stealthy sleek!

I can see the lure of the Diamond back. Its a mega functional and heavy duty cover. Just seemed too cumbersome to me and a removal looks more involved than with the MX4. To my eyes the Diamond back yells "Hey look at me" which might work for some but again, to my eyes, it takes away from the truck.

Am i biased? Well....of course!

I do love how the MX4 just blends into the truck.

We use the exact same tubs and they work like a charm. I bought a ratcheting cargo bar at Harbor freight to keep the tubs from sliding around.

As an aside, the pictures you took that are sideways is because that's the orientation you took the picture on your device and even though you might have edited the orientation before posted the server reads the camera data for the orientation. The only way to possibly correct the orientation is to edit the picture on your device and upload again.
Weekend of moving from our large home into a small rental home. Loaded and unloaded the RL more times than i could count.

At NO time did the MX4 prove to be an issue. THe rails took their fair amount of abuse and the cover was opened and closed like it was undergoing UL testing.

Even had someone in the new neighborhood comment on the sleek look of the cover (after oogling my RL).

I give this cover Two thumbs up!
HI... wound up at Costco today and saw the black and yellow tubs that Denicio mentioned. I have the BAK MX4 also but these tubs looked too tall in the store to be able to fit underneath the tonneau cover. Thought maybe our West Coast Costco carried a different size than his on the East Coast *but Denicio is correct!* 27 gallon black and yellow totes, fits great! Cheap too at $8 so I'm going back on Sunday for at least one more.

Yep, they JUST fit. If you pack your tub with a little bulge they wont fit too well.
Just got back from a week at the beach. We packed 3 Costco tubs in the rear with room for 3 tommy bahama beach chairs laying flat. Put a ton of extra stuff in the Trunk like inflatable rafts and other Bits and Bobs!

The 10 hour ride in the Ridgeline was sublime! Such a comfy ride. Averaged about 27 MPG according to the computer.

PRO Tip for Packing in Tubs: Roll your cloths like a big ole cigar.

Just finished installing my MX4. The brackets are drilled correctly and I had no problems. One thing that isn't known to me is to where to run the drain lines on each side of the tonneau. I also found this video to be extremely helpful compared to the Bakflip instructions.

I followed this install and it was easy going. One note is that the three rubber strips that are supposed to sit against the window when the top is all the way up and locked are not used. I used two strips that sit against the back of the cab which sticks back and the tonneau doesn't touch the window at all. I can take some pictures in the next few days as time permits to show what I mean.

Was a straight forward install and I think I spent 2 hours on it working by myself.

I also was provided with a strip of topper gasket which I didn't use. Did anyone use this along the front of the bed box?

Nope, its not needed.

Funny you mention drain hoses. I still have yet to install mine. Not sure where they go, truth be told. Have not really needed them installed after 3 months of owning the cover. I have not noticed a ton of water in my bed and the way i use my bed...it dont have to be bone dry either.

D
Good to know on the weather stripping. I will call Bakflip and ask them where they (drains lines) are supposed to go since there is nothing in the instructions which are pretty basic compared to the video I followed.
I have a template from Bakflip as to where the drain holes are to be drilled in the bed. Not sure I am going to do that thinking about it first...
Hi... I cut down the length of the included drain tubes, found some clear tubing that fit the existing drain holes in the front corners of the bed, and stuck some butyl rubber in the BAK tubes to mate them with the clear tubing. It works but I think I'll wrap some kind of tape around the two pieces in order to make a better seal... not much rain out here to drain away but it helps when washing the truck. :)
Have not cut the template holes yet as they are 3/4" and I really don't want to put that large a hole in two places in my bed so I might just get some Tygon tubing and do what you did.
