Curious has anyone used one of the headlight restore kits/polishes and if so recommend which one(s) may be better ...or to avoid using?

New covers are only like $50 each.
I'm going to boost OP's original question, 'cause I'm interested in the same. Any recommendations (based on good experience) for a kit that works well? Also, the method you employed. I have seen some that recommend 3000 grit paper to start with for badly oxidized lenses. Personally I don't mind a little elbow grease if it will yield similar results as buying new covers.

I use a Micro Finish Compound used for removing scratches before waxing. Use your product of choice on a cloth or wax pad and scrub in little circles one section at a time, and add elbow grease.
As mentioned above toothpaste will probably work as good as those kits. I haven't tried them as they seem such a rip off at $19.99

Our Maxima headlights turned yellow and I bought a Meguires headlight kit and it worked great. The headlights did turn yellow again after a year or so, so I just buffed them with the kit every other waxing. I think any brand will work fine.
Be sure to mask off paint around the headlight!
PS-I found that a terry-cloth washcloth folded over a couple of times and stuck to the velcro pad on my palm sander really sped things up vrs doing the work by hand. http://www.craftsman.com/craftsman-c3-19.2-volt-pad-sander/p-00911570000P

I used turtle wax rubbing compound and some even pressure with my hand and a damp shop towel , haven't had to reapply yet and that was a few months ago so it seems to hold up. They look brand new.

Some ppl might fuss at you for doing a "quick fix" and chastise you for not replacing the whole headlight unit but I know ppl are not made of money and this works just fine for me.

The lens on our 03 CRV still look new after many years of outdoor exposure thanks to Xpel film over them.
never lasts on our volvo...IO heard you should spray the lens with a clear paint when you are done?? not sure about that.

I have used several on my Acura 3.2TL & Ridgeline and once on neighbors Dodge Neon when I was doing my car. I have used the PLASTX by Meguiar's & some from New Wipe. The Meguiar's kit came with a drill attachment that is a sponge pad light abrasive. You put the PLASTX on it and polish headlight off.
I never used the drill just put PLASTX on with old rag & wiped off. The New Wipe I got came with sample of headlight cleaner. I used regular new wipe on OEM Tonnea Cover. But the headlight cleaner came with sponge abrasive pad & some microfiber cloths. Just like PlastX kit you put cleaner polish on pad and polish. Use clean microfiber cloth to take off. Some kits also come with a sealer liquid to make it last longer. You can by some product separate.

When my RL was fairly new, I bought and installed Weathertech's LampGuard protection. I have had no change in the lens in almost 5 years of driving around the country. It's strange how they advertise the mats so much, but not the LampGuard.
I think it is similar film material as the Xpel. It would make more sense to push sales on those instead of aftermarket stuff after the damage is already done.

Mine were bad. just bought some Blue Magic the other day and after one coat and some elbow grease took care of a lot. I will need to do a couple more apps but don't know what the out come will be. Wish I took pics and choices you have vary a lot but so does tooth paste.

No matter as long as it's not a gel. Hast to be like ol' school Crest. If you wish them to smell minty fresh, then go for it. Otherwise just go for the regular stuffQuote:
