Holy Dealer Accesory Markup!

So I stopped by one of the local Honda dealers today trying to get a look at a Forest Mist RL. Didn't find one, but did see something interesting. The RLs on the lot all had several accessories installed and priced next to the window sticker.

MSRP prices were pulled from Honda's RL Accessories page.

Appearance Protection Package $499 - Not sure what this contains; appears to be a junk charge as accessories normally in this package are listed separately.
All-Season Floor Mats $199 (MSRP $169)
Mud Guards (F/R) $299 (MSRP $116)
All-Season Trunk Tray $99 (MSRP $45) Think they mean Cargo Tray under rear seat.
Monogram Pinstripe $199 (MSRP ??) Have seen as low as $89 dealer on other vehicles.
Wheel Locks $121 (MSRP $87)
Door Edge Guards $219 (MSRP $105)
Die-Cast Running Boards $906.75 (MSRP $625)

I realize these prices include installation, and some of them arent so ludicrous but others are laughable like the door guards and wheel locks.
All of them are priced over MSRP. Even worse, some of these items weren't even installed on the vehicle, which was clearly ready for sale as it was parked right up front and had evidence of being test driven with dirt around the wheel wells.

This dealer recently changed hands from a family that had owned it for years to a larger dealer network. I probably won't even consider them when/if I buy a new Honda in the future. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem too uncommon.

That is one of the reasons why I do not accept a new vehicle with dealer installed accessories, nor allow them to put the ones I want on. Their markup is horrendous.

If the vehicle I want already have accessories, then I insist that they either give them to me for free, discount them below MSRP (including $0 labor), or take them off (especially the accessories I don't want). Otherwise, I'll wait for the next delivery of the un-accessorized one. The "otherwise" condition is what usually occurs.

I purchase my accessories on-line at a cheaper price and install them myself. I know that everyone can't install accessories easily, but I'm blessed with the ability and tools to do the job.

One reason I went with a dealer that only added one thing (splash guards) and those were at no cost. Paid almost MSRP but they also did not charge the stupid "advertising fee" or even the destination charge.

How does splash guards look? I still yet to see a Ridgeline with splash guards. The pictures they have in the accessories area aren't very flattering. Do you like them?
I just bought a set of splash guards sight unseen, hope they look ok....

Don't have the truck yet, it was supposed to be in the 30th but did not make it. I am hoping it shows up this week. The splash guards are something this dealer does quite a bit as a promo. This is the Pac NW so are almost a necessity. I will post some pictures once it shows up.

I think they look great...will see if I can post pics later.
Picked up a BE this afternoon. Honda claims the high accessory prices are for installation. I wanted a roofvtrack with a kayak attachment, they wanted over $1000 charging an hour installation fee for each item, the racks, the crossbars, and the kayak attachment. They also wanted to charge me installation fee to for the all weather floor mats. Told them it was highway robbery and declined.

When I read things like that I am thrilled that my dealer sold me the accessories at cost and did the install for free.....

Not many dealers like that, that's for sure. You wonder whether, if more of them treated us like that, there might be fewer dealerships making a lot more money.

:surprise:

To think that they do this because they often get away with it! Reminds me of the time I spoke to my cable company about them jacking up the prices. The person told me that only 15% of people call in. So that leaves 85% of people out there getting price gouged.

My local Autonation Honda dealer already had the pricing for the additional window tints and clear bra added to the sticker even though neither were on the truck yet.

Yep human nature it seems until one has had enough but sometimes that is just not getting what you want when you want or need it. Patience is a virtue.
Ordered the front and rear mud flaps today, just over $80 plus shipping. The OEM accessories are now starting to show up on a few Honda parts sites. I was able to make a deal on my BE before it arrived at the dealer so did not have to deal with the markup on accessories.

IMO, these are almost so commonplace that you don't even realize they are an add-on accessory. Fronts are larger than the rears.
