I would not buy an Avalanche myself. This is IMO of course but I know of two people who had them and both had multiple transmission problems. That's not saying of course that everyone does but it's a good reason to avoid that model from what I've seen.
I will say this though. I have seen the tranny apart from one at my buddies tranny shop and it is a pretty hefty design. Not a small thing and hence the towing capacity they offer of 8100 with the heavy duty version tranny cooler and gears.
