Honda Motor Co. plans to expand its Lincoln, Ala., truck
plant again, this time increasing annual capacity from
300,000 to 400,000 units by fiscal 2007, reports today’s
Nihon Keizai Shimbun.
The $90 million project will bring Honda’s annual
production capacity in North America to 1.5 million units
from 1.4 million currently.
The expansion will enable Honda to increase output
of its Odyssey minivan and consolidate production of its
Pilot SUV in Alabama. The Pilot currently is also built in
Alliston, Ont., but moving all production to Alabama will
free capacity in Ontario for Honda’s hot-selling Ridgeline
pickup truck.
The Nihon Keizai says Honda’s expansion, coupled
with already-announced projects for Nissan and Toyota,
will increase overall North American production capacity
for Japanese OEMs from 4.3 million today to more than
5.4 million by about 2008.
