I usually use a C-clamp to compress the pistons when replacing pads.
However, pick this up for $5 on my last trip to the auto-parts store...
I'd been eyeing the fancy $45 tool...but just couldn't justify it. This was a no brainer. I'm almost looking forward to doing my brakes.
