Is third fob even possible?

Unless I've missed the thread, it seems short of an act of Congress Honda will not or can not produce a 3rd fob for the 2017 Ridgeline. To avert a crisis should I ever lose my fob or have it malfunction when away from home my desire is to have a 3rd fob stored inside the truck either in a Faraday cage or sans battery and pack a flat key in my wallet. I recall when picking up my RTL-E being told ONLY 2 FOBS per truck. All of the posts that I've found on ROC have reaffirmed that fact. Has anyone been able to get a 3rd fob?

You could keep a flat key in wallet. As to the transmitter no. You like you say have to keep the fob from being seen by the sensors. Putting one in without the battery, the fob eventually loose it's programing so at that point it would be useless. The truck will start when the battery is dead, at least for awhile. Hold the fob up to the start button and push start. It while work until the residual power is depleteled.

Not an issue. Just insert fob in faraday cage pouch. I've got one and when I stick the fob in it there is no transmission of signal, even though fob has a battery. I understand how to get wallet key. My issue is I want to leave my 2nd fob with my wife, but I need a 3rd fob to insert in faraday cage pouch, which will be hidden inside truck. Should I be away from home and lose my fob or it malfunctions I want to be able to open the truck with a wallet key and retrieve the pouch that has the 3rd fob. So what I need is a 3rd fob. Surely this is not impossible.
Pretty Sure it's already been done, @Lifesaver1, I'm pretty sure he's already done it. Can't seem to find the post where he did.
Ok, was thinking faraday pouch was SIFI sorta thing. So I don't think that a third transmitter is a problem. Dealer should be able to program one into your truck. Have the key cut also. Be very careful with aftermarket keys and fobs. It's not a guarantee that they will program to vehicle. Even though they say they will.

PETDOC, I did it. I didn't post about it. Here is the "bag" I needed to do it. (FobGuard - Ideal Faraday Cage To Protect Car Keyless Entry Fobs / Key Remote Car Protection / Remote Start Keyless Entry Protection For Your Car) It is currently out of stock on Amazon. The extra Key Fob and Key will run about 80$ and then to have them Programed and Cut by Honda another 120$. The pouch was about 20$ (I think.) So it all works I got a hidden key/Fob, outside the truck and does not interrupt with my day to day driving. Hope this helps.

I did it just is case I lost my keys while camping or Kayaking, I could still get home.

I programmed a 3rd fob on my 2013 Accord, so I would guess that its the same drill on the G2. When I did it, the tech said we needed all the keys since it boots out all other keys that have been programmed. I have not done this on G2 yet since I never had a need nor the doomsday scenario I envisioned with two keys. However when I go out of town I do take the second fob with me and leave it at the hotel or place I'm staying during the trip, while on the road I leave the key inside a faraday style pouch inside the truck.

With that said, I doubt that the 2013 Accord system is different than the G2, the only part that sucks is the cost involved. About $100 for the fob and the labor to program it. Depending how well connected you are at the dealer, it will be a $150 to $300 project.

Interested as well. My concern is we do lots of water type activities and my concern is diving in the water and all of a sudden having that "OS!" moment when I realize the fobs in my pocket.

Thank you so much. I already have a FobGuard. Purchased before delivery of my vehicle. In 1986 I had a near new Toyota 4Runner stolen while I was in a movie theater and am paranoid about something like that happening again. I found when I forgot the fob was in the FobGuard I couldn't open my truck. It really does totally block the signal and I have no doubt a spare fob can be safely stored 'incommunicado' inside truck when in FobGuard or other Faraday cage pouch.

So I would also want to have an extra flat key to hide on the vehicle, but I don't need a third fob. Did you happen to ask how much Honda charges to cut an extra flat key to open the door?
Ask them to cut a demo key. It's just a flat metal blank. Around 15/20 bucks. It really was considered a practice key to learn how to cut the matrix key blanks.

DogOnBoard, Sorry to say The programming of the Key and Fob is what is expensive. They will charge One-fee to program one or both. A key, even by itself will need to be programmed. so you might as well have them both at the same time. -R
So...Why can't someone just said they lost a FOB and need a replacement ?? ...directly ??...and end up with total of 3 .

What am I not understanding here ??..is it like the truck only allowing 2 pairing and you need after market to get it registering a 3rd ??

:surprise:

There's only (room)? For a certain amount of keys or fobs that can be programmed. You can't say you lost it because when the fob that (got lost) is not present at the time the others get programed it will not work anymore. When the tech plugs the Honda computer in and starts the process, it's clears all codes and a new one is programed in. I don't see why a third can't be added.
I made a statement in an earlier post that be careful of aftermarket keys and fobs that say are correct for the vehicle and can't be programed. Been there done it.

See what Rob said as I quoted below...he did it...ended up with 3...he didn't end up with a useless one...so obviously dealer "can" do it. :nerd:

I'm just confused as why we have to go through the back door ? :| :surprise:

our keys comes with a serial # tag (IIRC)...phone up help line/dealer and ask for that "specific" set made and tagged/programmed it (at a cost) to your "specific" VIN #...Done ! :nerd:

???

But all I would want is another flat key that I could use to unlock the door mechanically through the keyhole. Why would a flat metal key need to be programmed to unlock a door? It doesn't even have a chip on it, right? I wouldn't need a third fob because I would have one of the original fobs hidden inside the truck in a shielded pouch.

Think of it this way. You somehow lost the little flat key that's embedded in your fob, so you go to the dealer and ask him to cut you a replacement flat key. No programming needed unless there's something magical about that little metal key that I don't understand. Anyway, I just wanted to know how much that would cost.

Edit: Let's keep this example simple and say you still had a flat metal key from your other fob that the dealer could use as a template to cut another key, if that's even necessary.

I always thought the physical key are just that..physical...and the FOB is where all the electronics tech are. :nerd:

What part of the physical/metal key get programmed ??
The small emergency key is just a piece of metal. No programming. Does need to be cut to the RLs key code by vin.

Ok, I didn't read DogOnBoard's whole post. If you go to dealer and ask them for a (metal key). There are two types. One that comes with truck and is a removable part of the Smart Start system. The other is a regular key shape, but it is just that, a slab of metal. The dealer needs the Vin to retrieve the key code to program the Matrix Key Cutter. Either one can be cut without the RL being there, as long as you have the Vin #. Or if it is your selling dealer they will already have the Vin on file. I'm going to guess a cost of $20 to 30 dollars. Depending on which blank they have in Stock. Some dealers I think don't keep the (practice) or what we called a (demo key) in stock. I used to work at a dealer, the key cutter (can we say computer) cost is around $8000.00 dollars for just that style key.
