We used to call that 'dieseling' because it is sort of running like a diesel and some hot spot (often hot carbon deposits) are igniting remaining fuel vapor without need of the spark plug to actually fire it. Result is the motor has been turned off, but it continues to ignite and turn over the motor a few times until all vapor is used up. My suggestion is a few tanks of Chevron premium with an extra bottle of their Techron fuel system cleaner additive in each tank and see if the issue slowly goes away. If it does, the motor was pretty dirty with carbon deposits.

That is post ignition detonation (aka dieseling, aka "run-on") and extremely hard to get in modern cars with fuel injection and computer controlled spark.... Often, other than the carbon deposits mentioned, in the old days it could be due to too high an idle or retarted timing. I'd consider a good tune up... Also make sure somebody didn't replace the correct spark plugs with "hotter" versions
