Looking for something different

With winter around the corner, I was looking for tires for the 09' RL (245/65R17) that I could use all year round and that also had the 3 peak mountain/snowflake symbol.

Two tires that I have looked at are:
~Nokian Rotiiva AT and KUMHO ROAD VENTURE AT51

Has anyone had any experience with either of these tires or other recommendations?
I know some tire manufacturers have the severe service symbol on their LT size tires, but not on all their P metric sizes.

I've been using Falken Rocky Mountain ATS for the last few years now on my 06 and have been very happy on how they perform.. I'm interested in hearing from some people about those tires you listed because I'm about due for a new set.

The wife says she wants more of a highway tread.....hmmm.
We do have 4 vehicles and since the RL does see 90-95% highway use, it was a valid point.

So I was thinking about the new category of All Weather.

Two tires that come to mind are the Toyo Celsius CUV and Nokian WRG3 SUV.

Tire shopping drives me nuts...lol. I'm about to buy another set of wheels/sensors and run two sets.

I can personally recommend Bridgestone Dueler H/L plus. I had them on my 06 and currently on my 07. Like you most of my driving is highway. I can only compare them to the Michelins I had on the truck but I feel they are a better over the road tire. Excellent handling and quieter. I didn't have any trouble getting through some heavy Long Island snowstorms. I don't know how they compare to the Michelins as far as durability goes but they are rated for 80,000 miles

Is the 3 peak rating a requirement in your state?

No, but I feel better knowing that the tires meet or possible exceed the required performance in snow testing.
Especially with the wife driving, nothing against female drivers, but mine has a tendency to freak out if she looses control rather than counter drive.
please get the Toyo Celsius CUV's installed and report back with your impressions...before I spring for a set...

I had great experience with Nitto tires Motivo. Not that price, but surely tough and reliable. Size I'm using by the way is 245/70R17.

There are more options with that size. Also about 1" diameter larger.
Did they fit with out rubbing or did you have to modify the splash guards?
Larger size makes the gearing 'feel' higher I believe. Did you notice any difference in feel as far as torque goes?

Just bought some Hancook Dynapros from Discount Tire $154 ea they have a 3 peak snowflake rating.
Put them oon my 17' Ridgeline they are 55 60R18 They do have the size you are looking for.

I have only had them for a day.
Noise: They are noticeably louder maybe 3-5 decibels. Not the worst AT tire I have had and not the best. There is no Highway hum that you get from some more aggressive tires.
Ride. Ride is a little stiffer but I can live with it. I could probably take some air out to soften up. But I know being wider tire taking air out will suffer in MPG.
MPG: Dont know yet will know soon.
Traction: Don't know yet have been offroad or on snow yet. Will report back.
Looks: Love the look, looks more like a truck now not so much car.....

I think they will work out for me but I wont know till I have they in some 3+ inches of wet snow.

Thanks for the info. I've looked at the Hankook Danapro ATM's. Their pattern is what reminded me of the Nokian AT's that I posted earlier, but just stretched out a bit.
They are OE tires on Fords and one thing that I noticed is the wraparound tread design seems to have a tendency to separate from the tire. I've noticed it on several Ford trucks. It looks like pieces of electrical tape flapping. Something to keep a eye on.
Other than that they are a really good looking AT tire for sure.

These were tested on consumer reports. I canceled my subscription after a year of non-use so I can't see the formal report.
I read on another site where someone posted a screen shot of the report that both of these tires performed almost identical and that consumer reports had to classify them as Performance Winter tires as they scored in the upper half of their winter tire testing.
They do note that they don't perform as well as some top tier dedicated winter tires, but still received good reviews.
I believe they gave the edge to Nokian as it stopped slightly shorter in wet conditions, but they also noted that the Toyo's have 5K more mileage warranty.

Either one would be a good choice I think. All Weather is a interesting category as long as the tires test accordingly.
Continental has developed a new AT tire. Not sever service rated, but Continental says it's a 90/10 Highway/Trail.
Interesting tire I think anyways.
