The primary reason I chased brands and models that were less likely to require warranty work for many years was because of my experience with warranty repairs. I've rarely had warranty work done where there wasn't some type of damage or improper repair done. These experiences go back 30 years when I had a new 1992 Grand Am that I caught an employee driving for personal use after hours. A Buick dealer had to replace the headliner, steering wheel, and center console lid in my 1999 Regal after they damaged all three items while replacing the fuel level sending unit under warranty. A Honda dealer had to repair the rear bumper cover on my 2017 Ridgeline after someone gouged it. Years later, this same dealer damaged a wheel while replacing a tire. They also left something loose after replacing the transmission in my 2019 Ridgeline. A different Honda dealer used the wrong viscosity of engine oil in an older Ridgeline. And, these are just obvious issues. Hell, just last week my mother had the battery in her 2019 Equinox replaced by a Chevrolet dealer. The CEL light was on when she left the dealer. My scan tool revealed a battery monitor module communication problem. I found that the dealer didn't reconnect it after the $400 battery replacement. I emailed the service manager pointing out their error, but he never replied - not even to apologize.Obviously, Roger has had similar experiences.
If you look at @wjfyfe post history, you'll see that he has an extremely sympathetic view towards dealerships, and expresses disdain for anyone who doesn't hold the same rosy/positive perceptions. Hence his comment..."This continual, all inclusive, vigilante style, dealer bashing sure does get tiresome!"There are bad dealers!!! And good ones. My reward for being a good and ethical Volvo mechanic was punishment and being the lowest paid - for not selling needless parts and for actually doing the work.
Obviously, Roger has had similar experiences.
Me too. I let the dealer do the first oil change on our Pilot. They changed the filter too. The next morning I had oil drips on my garage floor from the mess they left on the subframe. On my son’s Pilot they cut a chunk out of the fender well liner to gain access to the oil filter. (And for some reason swapped out his EarthDreams engine cover for one without the EarthDreams emblem.) This dealer generally does a good job with service work, but I wonder if they contract out oil change work.In my experience.![]()
OK - I've been around cars for 60+ years and this story "takes the cake" over anything I've previously heard.... I could "bear-ly" believe it...However, there are good dealers!😊
Traveling thru Billings Montana, while opening the console, I had a can of Frontier Bear Spray partially discharge! 😳👎. Unbelievable!! I drove straight to the Honda dealer.
It was wedged in and every time I tried to open the console, it would spray more. The protective wedge had come undone, somehow, on the trigger. the salesman and mechanic worked on it for over an hour. Got it out, largely defumigated, would not accept any pay. Bear spray now goes in the bed trunk , double garbage bag sacked.
We haven't become associated with a dealer here yet in Montana. Billings is a bit of drive but if they are as good as you say they are, I do have a brother there so that could be made to work. I will drive further to patronize a good service provider. To put myself into a hypocritical position, our local Honda dealer here in Great Falls is owned by Lythia, but past experience with two Lithia dealers in he past where both have proven themselves to be unscrupulous so presently I am avoiding them. We do have a dealer in Helena, but I have little to no information about them other than they also handle Toyota and Ford, but they are probably who we will try first when the MM pops here soon.I’ve wondered if wjfyfe might be using this dealer. I think there are only 3 Honda dealers in Montana.
Much to my surprise, I just received the following reply from the service manager:Hell, just last week my mother had the battery in her 2019 Equinox replaced by a Chevrolet dealer. Roger,
After reading your comments and reviewing their previous repair, I would be happy to reimburse the them labor installation of the battery.
Thank You for assisting.

Mom just messaged me saying the dealer fully refunded the labor for the battery replacement...and gave them another apple pie. I'm not sure what their deal is with apples, but they give away apple pies and have lots of posts about apples on their Facebook page. Weird.Much to my surprise, I just received the following reply from the service manager:
