No key/fob replacements available?!

888 Views 22 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  Ramasun7
I went to my dealer to get a replacement key fob for my 2021 RL. Dealer says there are none available in Honda Parts network, that they have been back ordered for months. When I asked when I might see one, he shrugged his shoulders.

Really? Lose this key and I have a $40k blue doorstop?

Any ideas?

I would check and see who the used car dealers around you use for keys to be made for their used vehicles and then check with them. When I bought my RL, it was a year old at an Infiniti dealer's used lot. They only had 1 key and I told them I had to have 2 keys for a deal. They agreed and I had to go back a week later when a locksmith was there making keys for a handful of their vehicles. The locksmith had OEM key fobs that they cut and programmed to the vehicle. Short of something like that, maybe you could find a used one on ebay.

I hadn't heard that Honda had this problem, but I know Toyota had a big issue with it last year. They were selling new cars with only 1 fob as well as an IOU for a second. Reading on Sienna chat, there are still many that haven't gotten their second key yet.
I feel your pain. Bought a '20 CPO RTL-E Feb 28. After signing off on paperwork, was THEN told #2 key was missing and they would back-order it. Suppose to have "2" per CPO agreement.
Today is 5/21/23 and story is same from dealer and Honda America: no delivery date.
Same thoughts about a lawn ornament should my only key fob go bad. Just hope the demise would not be a major distance from home.
My limited checking is that 2020 and up are Honda design only (and not from regular key sources / locksmith / Ace hardware / etc).
Like the truck, but... new vehicles are on lots with 2 fobs and new are being shipped from AL......
Not a happy camper for the price I paid.
Been there, done that... out of stock...

All say they can be ordered....but, no inventory of '20 & up - ymmv
Might search used auto parts suppliers. I did a quick search on Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market and there was one company that said they had 2022 fob available.
Check junkyards and LKQ for totaled Ridgelines and see if they have keyfob. If they have one the dealer can reprogram it to start the Ridgeline.
Check your local hardware/parts store. There are several after market key FOBS available. Not sure if there's one for the RL though.
Thanks for the suggestion; however, the one listed at carandtruck... - 72.....-A31 is for 2017-2019.
"we" still need Honda to step up distribution on the '20 & up units... 72...-A61 or -A71
At Lexus, when you buy a new vehicle, you only get one key fob and are promised another later.
I bought a new RTL-E on March 20th, it came with 2 key fobs.

Still current issue with Toyota. My wife's Highlander bought in Nov 2022 still awaiting other key fob. No owners that have shared have received theres.

There is a shortage for Honda key fobs now as well, however one auto locksmith I called said they can source one and cut it and program it for $275, which seems fair I suppose. I bought a used RL and it only came with one.
Do you need driver 1 or driver 2?

The problem with all of these parts sites is once you place the order, they check and find it on backorder and contact you to let you know. None of them that I have seen actually have live stock checks.
Thanks Seth, i took my chance on the ebay one! Seller with 100% and has sold a lot if these sort of items. Will let you know how it turns out….

Lot cheaper than a roundtrip plane ticket to pickup a car when the gods finally decide to produce these things.

Also better than my daughter’s experience recently with her (2day after purchase) cpo cr-v hybrid that blew a fuel pump in the middle of nowhere with her in the car with a baby - and she was told by the dealer, a week later, the now familiar “there ain’t none.” Lost $6000 of trip expenses. CPO gave her part of the tow fee. I think she said the car actually had an outstanding recall on f/p. So much for the C in CPO. She’s still haggling with them. Her first “new” car…

I had found a lot of keys at dealers and dealer related websites. In all cases they checked when the order was processed and came back with “out of stock.” One site listed 7 in stock!

Just a fact if our current zeitgeist i guess. Thanks for all the help.

Cool, hope it all goes smoothly getting it and then getting it programmed!
I have a AAA Premier membership, which currently costs $136/year. AAA offers locksmith services, which includes key replacement up to $250 for this level of membership.

When I lost a key fob for my '21 RTL last September, the locksmiths I contacted did not have Honda fobs available, so AAA said I could have the key replaced myself, and submit my receipts for reimbursement.

Fortunately I was able to purchase the key and fob from an online Honda parts source, as they were readily available at the time. I then took my new and remaining fob to Honda for programming, and submitted all receipts/bills to AAA. I was reimbursed in-full for my expenses, which was between $200-$250, as I recall.

All AAA plans have some level of locksmith services, which would certainly offset the expense of key replacement.
I do have reg AAA which has some level of key coverage as i remember. Thanks, i wouldn't have thought of that.
