I put in a digital temp gauge in my dash. I ran the cord through an opening in the firewall that had a rubber grommet in it. From there I ran it along the driver side of the engine compartment, down under the front bumper and mounted the temp probe directly behind the front license plate. It's always in the shade and shouldn't be picking up very much heat from the engine compartment.
