Pretty sure all dealers are liars, pricing question

So, I have been making calls in the Houston area on G2 RTL-Ts. Every dealer has given me the same song and dance, saying they can take 900 off anything in stock and 500 off if they order it and that is it. They also all have said that the most that they have ever seen as a honda discount is 1,500. Any truth to this or is this just dealer speak. Basically saying, that honda will only give 1,500 but they aren't saying that when the ridgelines cool off that some other discounts might be available from the dealer. Also, they keep quoting that the pilot has been out a while and still no discounts because of the popularity.

Ultimately, it all feels like dealer speak and in 6 months 2-3k off msrp seems reasonable, or am I just dreaming.

I got my RTL here in MA for $1000 over invoice - period. Worked the deal for a while but would have walked away. The dealer told me I got the best deal on the east coast - yah, right - they seemed to think I thought it was a good deal!! $1K over invoice was the absolute worst deal on any new or used car I ever negotiated - since I really like the RL I took the deal - hold off for availability and you'll get one below what I paid.

I got around 1600 off on an RTS, no trade, no dealer extras or dealer financing involved. Others have done much better. What I found was every dealer was unique so you might get lucky. However, if you look at inventory, E's and T's if I had to guess are the ones that folks want. It's going to be Honda dealer gravy time for a while. Some are convinced that Ridgelines go for sticker while others negotiate. Pilots seem to be discounted by about a trim level or more. My local dealer has 37 Pilots in stock which is rare. Mostly EX-L and up. The 9speed auto is a disaster so I think the public is catching on and staying away from Elites and Tourings. If you can wait it out, advantage to you. The same thing will probably happen with the next CRV but prices should fall faster.
My Ft. Worth dealer going through internet sales gave me $1500 off of list price on a RTL-T AWD, I had to take one that they have coming in as they have no RTL-T AWD in stock. I could have got the same discount for any RL they had in stock as well. If you are paying list price or over you are what I would say, throwing money down the drain. Most DFW area Honda dealers have 8-12 in stock all the time, so there is competition in this area for sales. One thing for sure, in Texas there is always competition in the large metro areas, good for buyers and good for dealers.

My price, max, is $500 over invoice, and they are not willing to do that yet, product is still too new.
OP, what dealers told you is more or less, correct, for now. Time will change that, but no guarantees to when.
Anything is possible I guess, depends on how well they are selling. In my case, I wanted a BE and they are pretty hard to find unless I was willing to drive from Vegas to the L.A. area. My local dealer let me have his next BE coming in for $500 under MSRP but then he slipped in a $249 charge for some stupid VIN kit where they put stickers all over the truck and pay a whopping $7000 if it's stolen and not recovered.

Would rather have the $249 back to go to the nearest casino and, in the immortal words of Wesley Snipes, "always bet on black" ?

Had a hard time budging on a Black Edition. Got a little off and a REALLY good trade, but couldn't go close to invoice.

$1000 over invoice IS a good deal as most are paying MSRP... I got mine for $500 below MSRP which is unusual for the RTL-E trim due to demand. Consider yourself lucky!

To each his own but y'all can wait and hope to someday buy a 2017 RL at your wish list price. While you're doing that I'll be driving mine everyday...

Since your in Texas I would go on the Honda of Ft. Worth https://www.hondaoffortworth.com/ website and get with Anthony the internet person and get a price from him. You should be able to get around a $1500 discount on a RL, they do not have any AWD in stock, I'm waiting for mine as we speak to arrive, they say 1st week of November. Their RL inventory changes daily, I would say they are selling around five per week. Yes you will have to take some of those addons that dealers add to the vehicle, but overall I think you will find the price very good.

Hi Trainman,

Thanks for the market info on DFW, I'm moving there next year when I retire to be near family. I've debated if I should buy here in the Southern California market before I move, thinking it may have been a larger marketplace with larger potential discounts, but your posting is encouraging me to wait and buy from a DFW dealer.

If you are "ordering", which I guess with Honda means you are just getting in line for one of the dealers allocated cars, why would you have to accept any addons? Is it not coming direct from the factory with no addons?
My dad decided to check out the Ridgeline since I've been really happy with mine and he's tired of a full size truck. Went to a local dealer by him (Houston-ish) and they had a MVA fee along with BS packages (nitrogen, etc) putting the price about $4k over sticker. I told him to wait til his next visit up here but will mention checking out that DFW dealer as well.
Was just offered full MSRP for a Black E that showed up at a dealer near me, guess I'm still waiting until spring...:|

Here in N. Texas the dealers have a pack among themselves to have this addon package added to each vehicle, I have been buying new honda's for over twenty years and it has always been there and they won't sell without it. It consist of, wheel locks, window tint, splash guards F & R) rear luggage tray, pinstripes, and nitrogen in the tires, I personally have no problem with the addons, except for the nitrogen and the pinstripes. Here is where is gets tricky, every dealer in the N. Texas Honda Group has these addons priced differently, some have them for $699.00 and some at $1995.00, sure it's a sales gimmick, so you have to be smart enough to figure what you can buy the vehicle for. I figure the cost of this package is around $350 and that's where I leave it when figuring what I will pay for the vehicle, like I said, some of the package I would probably buy anyway. Here is how my vehicle was priced to me,

Vehicle price $40,125.00 RTL-T AWD List price is $38,680 inc. freight and their addons
Customer Savings 3,130.00
Selling price 36,995.00
Texas sales tax 6.25 2,400.61
Lic, title, dock fee 337.25

Total sales price 39,732.86 OTD price

Drive out price includes, window tint, nitrogen in tires (free for as long as you own this vehicle), pinstripes, wheel locks, splash guards, cargo tray, destination fees, unlimited car washes, free 1st oil change, TT&L, and 24 hour roadside assistance.

I personally think that's a pretty good deal for a 2017 RTL-T AWD, put the pencil to it, what do you think even after getting those addons.

I had 2 different dealers offer a RTL-T for $36,450, which is 2190 off MSRP. I ended getting a demo RTL-T for $3619 with less than 3000 miles.

Just goes to show that deals are out there, if you don't like what the dealer where you are at is saying, move on.

Thanks train. I got laid off yesterday along with hundreds of people, they are outsourcing all of us to H1B's. Whole dept and a significantly large chunk of our co. The ballers (I'm one of them) get to stay awhile yet, so I've got a few months, but no idea where I'll be commuting to when the merry go round stops. That puts the RL on hold because if I end up in a long commute, it will exceed the capability of my current DD, because it's an EV. So now, instead, I get to figure out which AWD commuter to choose as a backup to the RL if I have to work far from the house. I appreciate the contact and I'm saving it. I grew up in 817 so no issues there. Only problem these days is driving from Dallas to 817, all these damn people flooding into the metroplex, from out of state has damn near ruined this place, the traffic, congestion, jacking property prices through the roof. If I see another California license plate.....I want to get a bumper sticker that says "You moved here and all I got is more traffic, congestion, and higher property taxes!" At least I'm not as bad as my friends in Austin, they are seething. A close friend has a modest home in Allendale and he is now paying over $1k a month in property tax due to the out of stater influx and it's hindering their way of life because of it.

Thanks for all the help. Sounds like its wait and see. I'm thinking just suck it up and wait until next year. Either get a new one during a good Honda sale or hope the secondary market has some more inventory.

Sorry to hear that, best of luck job hunting.

I hear you, my nephew already warned me, I will get my Texas car and drivers license the first day I'm there so no one sees my... California plates. The house we are having built already went up $50K due to all the new employers moving to the Dallas area and the pressure it is putting on housing prices. The good news, hopefully it will make it easier for you to find a new job.

Does it count that I use to live in Texas?

Thanks so much trainman for the great info. I've never had window tint so I'm not sure I would like it, is a light, medium or dark tint?

Pinstripes, absolutely cannot stand them, can you not get them to leave the Pinstripes and window tint off if you don't want them??

I have found in the past that dealing with each of the addons individually becomes more of a hassle then it's worth. Since they are already on the vehicle and I can tell you they are not going to remove them, all you really need to do is negotiate for a lesser price. If you look at my figures in the previous post where they got the selling list price is beyond me, $40,125.00 sale price, then they gave me a discount of $3,130.00, and the selling price of $36,995.00 for a RTL-T AWD that list from Honda for $38,680.00. So from what I can see is, I'm getting the vehicle for $1,685.00 off of list price, plus all the addons I listed. When the internet sales person handed my this sale sheet he said, this is our internet price and it's not negotiable. I personally never walk into a dealership without the name of an internet sales person, I talk to them before I get there, and setup a time to meet with them. In most cases they are giving you the best price you are going to get at that dealership. I'm trashing my pinstripe to, they just pull off on a warm day and forget about it.
