I've read a handful of write up on the installs of cameras. I'm looking to put a 3rd party dual DIN nav stereo in and want to install a backup camera for docking trailers and the wife. Seen many write up on camera placement options but I"m not understanding where the nav unit picks up the reverse signal.

Will this come from a signal in the converter for the steering wheel control, another signal that is there...or do I need to install a switch on the shift console?

It will pick it up from the reverse lamp. You will run the RCA cable from the LED screen to the camera. Many here have put the camera at the liftgate handle. I put my on my tag. There are many great posts when you do a search. I love my camera!!!:act024:

There are a few options. Some double din nav head units have a location in the back to plug in a camera. The camera comes up when you go in reverse or there is often an option to switch to the camera at any time. Search 'DNX9990HD install'. Some have used a LCD screen they put in the sunglass holder and tapped the power/ground to the camera from the driver side backup light wires, and powered the screen from above the rearview mirror.

Thanks guys...to be clear I"m using the Nav head for my screen.

John, is this wire available to find as it was created for those with factory Nav/camera or am I going to have to pop out the dash and go find the reverse light to hack into it?

Those links to the reverse wire are wonderful!. The one at the fuse box is a pain to get to!!

I'm no expert at this at all... in fact I know very little about the aftermarket options. BUT, if you already have the OEM Navi, I would question whether or not you can't just go straight to the navi box, the same as you would if you were buying the accessories back-up camera (at least that's how it was for the '06-'08 models). I installed one of those (OEM accessories back-up cam), and didn't have to go past the pillar between the doors and then under the driver's seat. I'll give you the link for the installation instructions for that OEM camera... maybe some of the same info will apply for your aftermarket unit. There are also "how to" threads on installing the OEM camera, if that is of any help to you (just do a search).

Don't know how much of this applies, but hopefully it is useful.

ALSO.... didn't I read threads about wireless versions of this same thing... or is that what you are doing?


Major EDIT: I'm reading back now & thinking my post here is misapplied? You said you were using your "nav head"... but didn't say OEM nav.... are you talking about aftermarket Nav as well as aftermarket camera?
