The 2006 Honda Ridgeline has earned a 5-Star safety rating for both frontal and side impact crash test performance from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), American Honda Motor Co., announced today. The Ridgeline, Honda's first truck, is the first ever 4-door pickup to earn the government's highest crash test safety rating.

Honda has six vehicles - more than any other vehicle brand - that achieve a top rating for both frontal and side impacts under the federal government's NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) program. They are the Honda Ridgeline, Odyssey, Element, Civic Coupe with front side air bags, CR-V, Pilot.

"Consumers don't want to sacrifice safety for performance, functionality or fuel efficiency," said John Mendel, senior vice president of American Honda. " The Ridgeline's unique design allows us to deliver on all fronts with great safety, class leading fuel economy and tremendous truck capability along with a fun-to-drive element unmatched in the pickup truck segment.

Completely new for the 2006 model year, the Ridgeline's integrated full-frame body structure is designed to help protect its occupants while reducing the effect of crash energy on opposing vehicles for improved compatibility with smaller vehicles. The Ridgeline, like most Honda vehicles sold today, is also equipped with an array of pedestrian safety features such as breakaway windshield wiper pivots; and energy-absorbing hood structure and hinges.

In keeping with Honda's industry-leading "Safety for Everyone" initiative, all Ridgeline model come equipped with a comprehensive list of advanced safety features including dual-stage, dual-threshold front airbags; Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with Traction Control; side curtain airbags with rollover sensor; driver's and front passenger's side airbags (passenger side airbag with Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS) to prevent airbag deployment when a child or small stature adult is in the deployment path); anti-lock brakes; and electronic brake assist.

The side impact testing of my older Tacoma (before the redesign) was a big reason I bought a new Ridgeline.

Something about the testing skid crushing through the door was a bit unnerving (my Tacoma scored the lowest possible rating and there was a side note to the effect of the good luck keeping your pelvis if you get hit).

There are also the new studies out on the effectiveness of stability control.

Nice post Vertrkr. These are aspects of this truck that Honda needs to advertise more. I think Honda's focus has been to convince consumers that Honda made a truck that explains all the dirt and mud slinging in their commercials. The safety features sold me on the RL.

This 5 star rating alone make the RL the best truck in it's class, not to mention all the other features that we're all familiar with.

Some people don't like the looks of this truck, but let's see if they find safety beautiful.

This safety rating goes straight to the heart of Honda's target market. It should also be a shot across the bow of the competition.

Re: Ridgeline is First Ever Four-Door Truck to Earn Top Government Crash Test [5.9.5]

WOW, thats great, should help insurance costs. I am glad I did not have to ride along for those crash tests, but both of them look good at the drivers area.

Thanks, Vrtrkr. That's welcome news, knowing it would be a safe vehicle is now reinforced in writing.

I hope the neanderthals finally realize that this truck is not a Pilot with the back chopped off, or a minivan in drag. It's a brand new chassis, designed with safety first.

Who cares if it looks like a "refrigerator" (as some reviews have claimed). It's safe, comfortable, fun to drive and LOADED with features. As Car and Driver stated: "the Ridgeline is in a class by itself! Way to go, Honda.

Has anyone else checked with thier insurance carrier to see if this information will lower rates.
When I bought / insured my Ridgeline, the insurance company had never heard of it, nor had any "numbers" on it indicating a rate. They ran some numbers and told me how much I owed.

I called them when these results became available, asking, "Based on this fantastic safety rating, will my rate be adjusted?"

Answer: "We will perform a reassessment the month before your renewal."

I really dislike insurance companies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, me too, but I work for one  We don't do auto.

I'm going to call my insurer today about the Lo-Jack discount. I'll ask them how they feel about this as well.
