Looking for a second set of rims for the summers, something sporty.
I would prefer a direct fit which on my truck would be 17" x 7.5"
with 5 x 120 pattern and a 45mm offset. Tire is 245/70/R17

Very limited selection using those numbers. If I use an 8" width then
the number of available wheels increases by ten fold.

My question is will the 8" wheel be a fit with no issues?
So far I have a boatload of conflicting answers.

The tires are still over 9.5 inches wide, so it shouldn't be an issue. Some tires are made to fit certain rim widths, however, so you may want to check with wherever you're purchasing the tires from.

That's true, for every tire size there is a specified recommended wheel width range.

Here is an explanation with a formula here. You should be just fine with an 8" rim.
