So I have had my RTL-E for 5 weeks and in that time I have had one stone chip on the windshield that occurred about 2 weeks ago. I opted for the stone chip repair at a local glass shop since it was toward the passenger side. Well yesterday I must have had a second stone/pebble hit the upper part of the windshield. I didn't hear anything but after a meeting I got in the car to find a 4 inch crack coming straight down from the top of the driver's upper windshield. Took a look at it and there is a subtle stone chip mark so I cannot claim a defect in the windshield or installation caused this crack.

So, now I am going to get this replaced. I know these acoustic windshields are expensive but I want this fixed since I just bought my first new vehicle in a long long time! I'll be making an insurance claim on it but wanted to know if I should go through a Honda dealer due to the special windshield or go through a local reputable glass shop? We have a small local chain that did the stone chip repair that I have trusted over the years. I figured they are more adept with windshields than a dealer. Would they simply buy an OEM windshield? I doubt there are aftermarket replacements yet.... or are there??

So I stopped by the dealer and asked the service manager who they use for windshield repairs/replacement. He gave me the contact info for their glass installer and I called them and initiated the insurance claim. They'll order the OEM windshield and install it right at my dealership. The dealer will stand behind the work so if there is any issues with the Honda sensors they'll take care of things. I feel much better with doing it with the dealer involved as I spent time reading some of those Accord issues in the above link and felt I didn't want to go to a glass shop that did not have an affiliation with a Honda dealer.

I'll post further details when the windshield is replaced.

Wow. When I got mine replaced through insurance I used the glass shop recommended by my Honda service manager. The job was actually done by the shop right at the dealer. Since it was insurance I didn't get an itemized breakdwon but they told me the acoustic windshield was ~ $800 and labor was ~ $300. I just had a $100 copay and my insurance agreed to cover the bill so I didn't shop around. With the parts prices you quote it sounds like my dealer and shop got a nice profit on this one!

Good luck. Are you nervous about the Honda Sense, Lane Keep Assist remaining aligned/calibrated after the replacement? This is why i went with the glass shop trusted by my service manager.

Is it thinner or just a side effect of this new Acoustic windshields that manufacture are starting to use?

I am fairly certain that the acoustic windshields are slightly thicker than the non-acoustic windshields.

I am not sure that the frequency of windshield events has to do with the windshield composition versus the aerodynamic design of the front end and hood of the Gen 2 RL. It may be a combination of the two. I now have a very micro ding in my new windshield. It is so small I thought it was a small area of debri or dirt. I may self fill this one withe the repair kits from the auto store.

I added an AVL (or is it AVS??) hood wind deflector so now I have a force field protecting my windshield

So, as the OP and almost a year to the day later I have just had a second windshield replacment. Another rock thrown from an oncoming vehicle smacked the windshield. I have never had this much windshield damage with any other vehicle... sigh. For size reference this ding is about the size of a half dollar coin. It pulverized the exterior laminate layer. Right in the driver sight line too. Only option was a replacement. I went with the same glass shop that my dealer uses. They did a great job last year and do the replacement right at the dealer. This allows for any recalibration of the lane depart warning system components.

I had to have my windshield replaced a couple months ago. safelite replaced with OEM glass. Installer said everything went back together perfectly. My question is how many E or BE owners also had the lane sensing cameras recalibrated? Mine seems to work OK but maybe not quite as good as it did. Those that did have their's recalibrated I assume the dealer had some special tool to do it?

My third windshield that was installed a couple weeks ago is an OEM but not a Honda windshield. My second windshield was Honda glass. The LKAS does not work quite as well with this 3rd windshield. So, I went to the dealer and had them do a recalibration hoping this would help. They said it was fine after doing the check (FYI, they set up some cardboard "walls" around the vehicle with some calibration markings. Tedious per the service manager since these walls have to be precisely positioned for the test).

So, I drive with it as-is. I don't have the time and energy to pursue and contest this via my insurance. I would say that the LKAS flips on/off about twice as much as it did with the Honda glass. I drive down a road with new and vivid lane marking lines and it randomly deactivates then flickers back on. At times, it barely detects the lines. Other times, it is almost at the Honda glass level of operation.

I know others here will push me to contest this. I just don't have it in me to do it right now with other things going on. M ywindshield is intact and serves its purpose. That is enough for me.

For others, absolutely make sure you fight for Honda glass on your first contact with your insurance if you have need for a replacement.
