Up in San Juan Capistrano last Saturday night, saw this nice example of a 21 window VW. She's a beauty, with tilt out windshields, giant canvas sun roof, curved rear 1/4 glass and cargo deck cages. Last I looked, these once cheap vans are valued in the 6 figures or so. Very sad what money has done to the car hobby.

Still, she sure is purdy. Her stable mates are too.

I think those teak and chrome racks in the lower left corner are usually mounted to the drip rails - placed front and behind the giant sun roof. Check out that Plumb Crazy 69 440 Charger R/T in the foreground. Izat a 60 Vette? And a 63-ish Nova? Sweet.

That looks like a 66 or 67 190 SL Benz.

Having a hard time which ride to focus my limited lust on. That 442 is very nice.

In case you're curious where these rides are, check this out.

Not sure if that's a collection or if they are for rent. Maybe both. Any one of those rides would make a cool day rental.

Yea, 21-windows are going for stupid money these days.

$100,000 is cheap for a restored 21-window.

'only' $135,000

$135K and its modified. They might be nice/functional upgrades (power disc brakes & IRS) but in terms of "collectability" that bus is far from original. And it doesn't even have curved 1/4 glass!

People. Money. Cars. Not always a good combination. I guess its an example of "got it/flaunt it". I'm thoroughly disgusted with what money has doe to the car hobby.

<SIGH>

BTW: I wonder how they added vacuum to create "power" brakes in that bus? Perhaps a 100% duty cycle pump? Never heard of a air cooled VW with power brakes.

I am with you. However, I cannot believe anyone would rent these cars out, other than to a movie company.

Wish I still had my '70 Olds 442. Sad thing, I do not have one picture of it. Again, how sad.

My bad, the busses with the curved glass are 23-window not 21-window. Here's a restored 23-window for only $179,950.

A cheaper one is here for $150,000 OBO

Here's one for $135,000

Clearly $179,950 is nuts, but with so many over $100,000k, I guess that's where the market is these days.

Lastly here's a 'driver quality' 23-window for only $79,999

Not your bad - mine. It seems I can't even count. :act060:

Geez. Those are all beautiful and I can't think of a more fun vehicle to drive but GOOD GOLLY. Driving a 6 figure vehicle - even on special occasions only - would be nerve wracking. Not cuz of big $ but cuz of fear of damaging an irreplaceable ride. Great eye candy though!
