Suggest Next Maintenance -- G1

3226 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  ISO Truck
I recently purchased a 2014 G1. Second owner. Approx. 30K miles.

It was sold, serviced, traded, and re-sold to me by the same dealership.

Here's what I know about the service history. I am soliciting suggestions for near-term servicing.

Note: A close inspection of the business end (hitch receiver) suggests this vehicle has never been used for towing.

The cabin air filter on these trucks really gets dirty / full of junk quickly. If your info is correct and they didn't do that (a second time) recently then you should put in on your to do list.

The transmission fluid / front differential are probably going to be up for their first change out at around 30k miles.

I'm not 100% sure but I thought that the rear differential was due for its initial fluid change at around 15k. The interval then is something like every 30K.

In general you should follow the maintenance minder but since you didn't have the truck since new I would certainly consider doing the rear VTM4 change if am correct about the 15k initial interval.

Others will surely chime in shortly to let you know if I am right or wrong:)

Another thing that I can think of is the rear bolts for adjusting alignment. They tend to become solidly locked to the bushings that they pass through by corrosion very easily on the Ridgeline. Once this happens its truly a PIA to deal with, requiring cutting out the bolt and replacing the bushing / suspension arm. While your truck is newish I would consider pulling the bolts and applying something like antisieze (even grease) to the bolt shaft. This would mean lifting up the rear of the truck and either realigning the rear or carefully marking the position of the bolt heads.

Also, make sure the drains are clear at the bottom of the door panels. Since you are new to having a truck with a trunk, always make sure that the "rain gutter" that forms a perimeter around the trunk is clear. If you have valuables in the trunk and don't want them to get wet frequently do the above cleaning and as a precaution, avoid parking on a hill with the front angled down.

The ability of the brake calipers to float freely is crucial for brake longevity and proper operation. The Ridge does seem to have issues in this area. You might want to take a look and manually "exercise" the calipers range of motion. You could also premptively clean and regrease the slide pins to get a good base line.

On the fun side . . .If you like music, consider as a minimum upgrading the front tweeters. Its pretty inexpensive and easy. If you like music more, also replace the factory door speakers with quality aftermarket. The stock speakers are truly crap.

Have fun!

VTM-4 is past due (Rear Diff), and since I know your planning on towing with it and otherwise it will be low miles, just plan on the Severe Service Schedule

Attaching both so you can see what was due.

Also Brake Fluid is 3yr. Again since your planning on towing, do it now, and while in there inspect all brake sliders and pads

Thanks gents.

This vehicle would have been on the regular service interval. I spoke with a service advisor and he confirmed the VTM4 was changed at the 15K service (the Carfax service info I had and posted above was incomplete.) Brake fluid was flushed/changed 2/17. It has had four oil changes (plus the original oil), most recently about 200 miles ago.

So I think right now my priority is going to be replace all transmission, differential, and transfer case fluids, next month. That will give me a 30K miles baseline to work from.

After that, I am going to stick to the maintenance minder on the oil changes and other service intervals. But I am also going study the severe duty schedule to make sure we are on top of that and get those items ahead of schedule.

Thanks for those tips about the drains, too!

P.S. I am probably not one to modify the hi-fi. I don't use it much -- just not an audiophile. So I guess I'll save some money there.

Basically the Severe Service Schedule cuts every time line in 1/2. I strongly suggest if your willing to pull the wheels & tires and have the ability to do a "brake" job, ie, replace pads and or rotors, to inspect them, watch for rust on the sliders, overlubed (incorrectly) or completely dry on the pins and sliders for the pads and calipers and any abnormal wear, a stuck caliper does more damage to the pads than late braking would ever.

I also agree with @eurban, any bolts you can or are willing to pull, anti-seize and re torque. Speaking of re torquing, the spark plugs require 13 ft-lb, and should be checked, back 3 are a PITA, but the front 3 are where most issues arise.

So as an update, I went ahead and had the dealership do the three driveline fluid changes (transmission, transfer, and VTM4).

In the future, I plan to do these myself. But given that the vehicle is still under full oem warranty, I wanted to have a dealership record of this service completion at 30K miles.

Thanks again for the help.
