The curved mirror thingy must've been an idea by a guy who was mandated to put one more feature in the truck. A rear seat conversation mirror. I suppose since the truck pretty much drives itself you can spend more time having conversations with people in the back seat.
No, it's for keeping an eye on kids in the back seat.

We first saw this on my wife's 2010 CR-V, which was at a point when we had a young 'un in a forward-facing carseat, so it was quite a functional little addition.

That said, the sunglasses holder in my Ridgeline 2G is just a bit too curvy to make it easy to put my glasses up there. I've gotten more used to it now, but still not crazy about it.
