Trailer Wiring Harness - disappointed in Honda

28729 Views 72 Replies 36 Participants Last post by  SOTL
I got the FWD RTL-T. Got the truck home and realized it does not have a trailer wiring harness. Talked to the dealer who told me that it was only standard on the AWD. I pointed out that the website says EVERY Ridgeline comes standard with an integrated hitch and 7 pin connector. Dealer told me they'd install the wiring kit for $180.

I called Honda. After getting quite a run-around from them, I finally spoke with a case manager. He tried to tap dance around a bit, until I told him I was only interested in knowing if Honda would honor the claim on its website or not. He told me they would not.

Ironically, he told me he would send me a $200 customer satisfaction card that could be redeemed for Honda services. I pointed out the absurdity that Honda would not pay for the $180 harness, but they would give me a$200 gift card. Apparently he didn't see the irony and continued to deny my request to have the harness installed.

After owning many Hondas over the years... I gotta say. I was very disappointed in their refusal to accept responsibility for the statements in their website. This was little more than a bait-and-switch.

I just don't understand why Honda would be willing to tarnish such a sweet truck with such petty arrogance.

I started a thread about this when I first looked at the FWD Sport. It does say on the website when you go to features and specs that it is prewired on fwd and connector is standard on awd. There is some misleading sentences throughout the site, but if you look carefully its there.
I figured if it came with a hitch installed it would be wired up, but not in this case.
wow. that sucks. I would call honda again and complain about the response to the fact that posted on the website. I can't believe they are ignoring the site, I hope you got a screen shot.
Maybe the gift card was they way of acknowledging the mistake without setting a precedent? In the end it won't cost you anything but a little time to get the wiring harness installed, which means Honda is doing right in my book

Honda may have screwed up on their website, but they should own their mistake.

No... this is not Honda doing right. I need to tow now. The Honda gift card would be delivered in 6 weeks. Doing right would simply be to honor that which was advertised on their website.
Not trying to defend Honda here as I did also see what you saw and thought they all came with the connector. However, it is clearly stated in the specs section on the website.

Fair enough, 6 weeks seems a little excessive and not as helpful. Sorry this bit you. Unfortunately there appear to be numerous instances like this on the website with different sections saying different things; such as the thread on here about whether or not the RTL-T has navigation. If there is anything that is really important to potential buyers I guess it's best to confirm in the flesh before/when purchasing.

... This is true... but getting it right one place shouldn't absolve them from being responsible for getting it wrong somewhere else. We don't all see ALL of different sources of info they provide. If you've already seen all you need to, you may not want to delve into the detail.... and you shouldn't HAVE to delve into that detail to makie sure they don't have conflicting info there, right? !

I share the opinion that they need to own up for sure & make it right. I suspect they will do that, if this gets elevated beyond the dealer level responsibility. Escalate this issue!

I agree they should make it right for Jim_bo, and they should edit their website. I indeed thought all came with the connector initially, I even started a thread on here about it myself. I was disappointed when I went to look at the sport, as the towing capacity and hitch was on my list of things to check out. When I saw no connector and my salesman didn´t have any info yet, I took to the website.
There is no doubt it is very misleading, my point is it may be hard to call them on it because it does specify on the specs section.
What I don´t understand is why the dealer can´t go ahead and install this for the OP and they wait 6 weeks for the payment card from Honda.

A bit hyperbole but makes the point, none the less. What if Honda across the front page said "350 Horsepower and 35MPG", so you buy it only to see that somewhere else in the advertising media it has the true figures? No free pass, here. Make it right. Own your errors Honda.

It clearly states that every Ridgeline comes with a trailer hitch and 7 pin connector. It doesn't say anything about the connector being wired and the specs breakdown clearly indicate which models came pre-wired. I think it's great that Honda is providing you with a $200 gift card when they really are not obligated to do anything.

Not quite.

In one place it says that "every Ridgeline features a standard integrated tow hitch with 7-pin connector." (read: Hitch and 7-pin connector nothing about wiring)

In another place it says "Pre-wired for 7-Pin connector (2WD) and "7-Pin connector(AWD). read: 2WD comes pre-wired for a 7-Pin connector.

So, as written they all come with the hitch and 7 pin connector.
The 2wd also comes pre-wired for said connector.

Searching on the Pilot forums it appears that Honda has been claiming for quite some time that various models are "pre-wired" for towing when all they really mean is that you can buy an additional harness to connect the pre-wiring to the plug (no splicing or additional relays/amps required). Other trim levels (such as the Touring) come "completely wired", not "pre-wired". Look around other forums...apparently the term "pre-wired" is not universal from one manufacturer to the other (Honda, Toyota, GMC and Jeep appear to have different interpretations).

Standard corporate legal department speak for "screw you, we do not have to be responsible for what we say or do". This sort of thing is standard everywhere thanks to corporate legal but how the company actually handles these things separates the good companies from the bad:

Good Company: "We are really sorry for the mistake on our webpage, we will abide by what it said in your case but fix the error as soon as possible."

Bad Company: Read the disclaimer which was clearly posted "in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard'".

Que Lawyer Jokes: "How many lawyers does it take?....." "what do you call a lawyer?...."

FYI, my father was a lawyer back in more honest times....
Honda has continued to confuse the issue. It began with the G1 when the hitch and harness were all accessories except for 2007-2008 when the RTX came from the factory with the full hitch and wiring harness. Then in 2009, Honda put the hitch on ALL RL trims, but only included the full wiring harness on the RTS and RTL trims.

That continued as Honda made the Sport (hitch but no harness) and the SE (full hitch and harness).

Look Honda. It's a truck. Put the full tow kit on all trims. Don't confuse the customer and the issue. You really need to be clear about this.

I don't blame people for being upset.

For those of you stuck with a RL trim without the harness, do yourself a favor and put the OEM harness on it if you're going to use it. Do NOT use an aftermarket kit. (assuming the G2 RL harness is similar to the G1 harness with associated relays, etc.)

Lawyer...Haha... I'm just a average joe but thank you for thinking I'm that intelligent... I only have 2 posts because I bought my Ridgeline last week and just found this forum...I don't believe everything I read on the Internet and realize mistakes do happen ... The error was made assuming it was equipped with something and not verifying it first hand... The original person who posted this complaint took the tiny print under a picture as being set in stone... Mistake #1 ... Purchasing a vehicle with full intention of using it to tow but not verifying before purchase...Mistake #2... Sounds like Honda did step up to the plate and give $200 to a customer driven mistake... So no I'm not a lawyer for Honda and have my own thoughts and opinions... These are mine like yours are yours.. Block away sir...
