Hello everyone!

Not sure if anybody else saw this..... Just received a recall notice P30 dated on Jan 6, 2023.

It says, "Vehicle may not re-start". I went on the Honda Canada website but no more info is available neither on the US website.

Happy New Year!

....and I just talked to my Honda dealer. Just brand new recall that popped up on his system too. Just need to reflash the ECU. Apparently, the vehicle may not re-start if you pre-heat the vehicle stationary and then engage it into Drive. Lucky that I was going for my first A1 maintenance appointment tomorrow!

Glad I opted for the block heater :)

I don't see a recall notice yet for my 2022. My idle stop has only worked intermittently since new. What is the production month of your truck?
I think it’s 05 so May 2022. They not only reflash the Ridgelines. Another customer with a Pilot just had his vehicle updated.

I would call your dealer and ask.

Mine is a Feb 2022 build and there was a TSB/service bulletin (22-007) to update the software. I had the dealer check mine over the summer but they said the software was already up to date. It sounds like there might be yet another update for the idle stop software.

In June 2022, NHTSA opened an investigation into 2016-2020 Pilots with the the 9-speed transmission after receiving 221 complaints for the vehicles failing to restart automatically. NHTSA also requested information for other Honda and Acura models with the 3.5L engine and 9-speed transmission including the 2015-2020 Odyssey, TLX, and MDX, but not the Passport or Ridgeline.

The information or an extension request was due by August 2022. Honda almost certainly requested an extension. It's possible the 2020 or newer Ridgeline is affected and will be recalled, but there's nothing publicly available from NHTSA or Honda about it at this time.

Added TSB 23-008 Product Update: PGM-FI Idle Stop Software Update (2020-2023).

BACKGROUND
Under certain circumstances, after coming to a stop and the idle stop feature engages, the vehicle may not automatically restart. Typically, the customer can immediately restart the vehicle by selecting Park and pushing the ENGINE START/STOP button.

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
Owners of affected vehicles will be sent a notification of this product update. Do an iN VIN status inquiry to verify eligibility. Some vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your new or used vehicle inventory. Repair these vehicles before they are sold.

CORRECTIVE ACTION
Update the PGM-FI Software. NOTE: The software update will decrease the Idle Stop operating range. As a result, the customer may notice reduced idle stop engagement when their vehicle’s battery is approaching the end of its useful life.

Added TSB 23-010 Warranty Extension: Engine Does Not Auto Restart After Entering Auto Idle Stop (2021-2023).

BACKGROUND
Under certain circumstances, after coming to a stop and engaging idle stop, the vehicle may not restart automatically due to excessive cylinder pressure and/or low cranking torque. Typically, the customer can immediately restart the vehicle by selecting Park and pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button. NOTE: If 23-008 Product Update: PGM-FI Idle Stop Software Update is applicable to the VIN, the PGM-FI software must be updated first before the warranty extension applies. Honda is extending the warranty coverage for valve adjustment to 10 years from the original date of purchase with no mileage limitation.

CORRECTIVE ACTION
Adjust the valves.

It will be interesting to read the NHTSA investigation file on this one. Since the valve clearances TSB only applies to 2021+ MYs, did Honda change to a lower torque starter or change the power circuit (smaller capacity battery) in the 2021MY? I guess if valve timing is off the combined torque of turning over the engine and driving the TC is more than the starter system can handle and selecting Park will reduce the TC load? There must be a very small window in the cycle where this failure can occur.

Wow! That's something. Not only is this "feature" a potential safety issue, it potentially damages the engine. And yet people wonder why others hate this "feature" so much. Glad I got my handy dandy idlestopper installed. Don't even have to think about it!

I don't believe it "potentially damages the engine". It appears the warranty extension is for valve adjustments that can cause the engine to fail to restart. It doesn't appear that the auto idle stop features affects the valves, but the other way around, actually.

Checking valve clearance is part of our required maintenance during services A, B, 1, 2, or 3 but oddly only "if they are noisy". It's not until 4 which is also replacing the timing belt that it reads "inspect valve clearance" without the disclaimer "if noisy". Sounds like Honda were more concerned about valve clearances widening, getting noisy, rather than tightening causing hard starting. I imagine new models going forward they'll shorten the valve check interval in scheduled maintenance and eliminate "if noisy".

The warranty extension on the valve adjustments appears to be the result of valves getting out of spec causing an increase in cylinder pressure which can prevent the engine from restarting automatically under certain conditions.

The new 3.5L V6 used in the 2023 Pilot no longer has adjustable valves.

Thanks for all this info @zroger73. Question though, why doesn't the valve adjustment extension apply to all models and all years of V6's with idlestop? I also have the crackling radio with my Passport so I'll have to take it in for that too And I got a brake fluid change code on the MM for a 2 year old car with less than 25k. Too many events for such low mileage. Time to get rid of this puppy.
