USB Music & Mac OS X

I was excited when I read in the Owners Manual that I could play music off of a thumb drive. So I loaded up a drive with some tunes, plugged it in to the center console USB port. Turned on the audio and got.... nuthin’. Erased the USB stick and tried it again with the same result. My, this was a letdown.

Two days later I thought to try something. I reformatted the USB using the NTFS option in Mac Utilities. Put some music on it, and this time it worked...!

It would seem that Mac OSX files are not compatible with the audio system in my RTL.

Glad you got it figured out! The likely reason for your troubles is that your flash drive was probably formatted as "macOS Extended (Journaled)" file system, which is actually HFS+ file system, and therefore cannot be read by the in-car infotainment system. Conversely, the Mac can read and write to FAT/NTFS file systems. As an FYI: your files themselves didn't change, just the format of the file system of the actual flash drive.
You are absolutely correct TNTA2...! I've been a Mac user for 10 years now, and all of the flash drives I have lying around are set up as macOS Extended. Now, I have to spend a little more time with the manual to figure out how to navigate through the different "Artists" folders.

I'm kind of an "old school" guy, and am more familiar with using CD's rather than .mp3's. I'll get there..... someday.

Same thing applies to navigation updates via USB, gotta use NTFS format on your thumb drive.
I too was having problems with USB thumb drives, but with the hidden files (.Trashes/ .Spotlight-V100/ .fseventsd) and having the head unit either throw up it's hands and not play anything after encountering one, or having to wait for the head unit to scroll through them. Here is how I solved my issue:

I use Mac OS X 10.13.1 Sierra. I have used 32Gb up to 256GB Thumb Drives.

1. Use "Disc Utility" to format a 32GB Thumb Drive (EX-FAT for anything bigger).

2. I name the Thumb Drive "Ridgeline" (or whatever you want).

3. Use the "Format" pull down menu and select, "MS-DOS" (i.e. Fat32).

4. Use the "Scheme" pull down menu and select, "Master Boot Record".

5. Drag and drop all the .mp3 files to copy them over to the Thumb Drive (you can keep them in album folders if you like). Wait for all the files to copy over.

6. Open "Terminal" app found in your "Utilities" Folder.

7. Type "cd /Volumes/Ridgeline" (no quotes and use the name of your Thumb Drive if it isn't "Ridgeline") and hit Return on your keyboard.

8. Type "rm -rf ._.Trashes .Trashes/ .Spotlight-V100/ .fseventsd/" (again, no quotes) and hit Return on your keyboard.

9. Type "dot_clean /Volumes/Ridgeline" (again, no quotes and use the name of your Thumb Drive if it isn't "Ridgeline") and hit Return on your keyboard.

10. Quit "Terminal" app and eject the Thumb Drive.

11. Plug the Thumb Drive either into the front USB port in front of the gear shifter, or inside the center console cubby.

12. Either start the truck or single press the start button to enter into "ACC" mode.

13. On the head unit, select "Audio".

14. Select "USB" (looks like a trident).

15. You should hear your music.

Now the only problem that I am having is that the folders in the Root directory show up on the infotainment screen almost black (unreadable in my closed garage, that's how black. Not Spinal Tap black, but close). I need to figure out a way to make the artist folder not black. All the artist sub folders are readable (white letters on screen), just not the parent artist folder.

How do I get the artist root folder to not be dark? The album sub-folder is normal. Here is a photo of what I'm talking about.
