Used G2 with odd pricing

A fairly local dealer has four used 2017 Ridgelines. One has 15 miles, one has 17, one has 40 and one has 270. They are asking over MSRP for all four, while at the same time there are plenty of Ridgelines at other dealerships. There is a carfax report on each one and title was issued to a dealer in June, sold at auction in mid-January and title transferred to this dealer.

I am guessing that a few dealers went out of business and their cars were sold at auction? I guess since title changed they are considered used? If find that odd. I also find it odd that they are asking for more than new Ridgelines that are on lots less than ten miles away.

It is one RTL-E and three RTL-T, but there are plenty of both around.

that is strange...hard to believe the dealers went out of business with brand new trucks on the lot?
Actually as I look at it closer I don't think they did. Here is what carfax says:

RTL-E -- 6/17/16 offered for sale by Schomp BMW, Highland Park, CO. 11/2/16 title issued in Torrence, CA. 1/9/17 sold at auction. 1/18/17 offered for sale by local dealer. It had 13 miles on it when sold at auction.

RTL-T -- 6/23/17 offered for sale by Planet Automotive, Golden, CO. 10/29/16 vehicle sold. 11/17/16 title issued in Torrence, CA. 12/26/16 sold at auction. 1/6/17 offered for sale by local dealer. It had 10 miles on it when sold at auction.

RTL-T -- 6/17/16 offered for sale by Honda of Greeley, Greeley, CO. 10/27/16 title issued in Torrence, CA. 12/26/16 sold at auction. 1/21/17 offered for sale by local dealer. It had 19 miles when sold at auction.

RTL-T -- 9/27/16 title issued in Torrence, CA (No listing of original dealer). 12/26/16 sold at auction. 1/6/17 offered for sale by local dealer. It had 14 miles on it when sold at auction.

I do wonder what happened to cause that, but the stranger mystery is why they are asking $43,980 for the RTL-E and $39,980 for the RTL-Ts.

I notice American Honda Motor Co., Inc and Honda North America Law Department are both located in Torrence CA, so that probably answers why Torrence is the common factor in all these. Strange. Interested in seeing what unfolds on these.
Theyre trying to make a buck. I bet the price is negotiable. If not they will sucker someone one day.

Maybe a dealership with no one else around could get away with it, but I just went on google maps and counted. There are 30 Honda dealerships within 30 miles, although a sucker is born every minute.
From a warranty perspective I would steer clear. I see dealer loaners (not Ridgelines) with low mileage that are sold as pre owned that you can not get the remainder of the 3/36. I would just pass since there is no price advantage.

Dealers will often do and say anything they can to make a sale. We called a Honda Dealer and had them tell us they were the only ones with RLs in stock, despite being within an hours drive of 12 other dealerships with RLs on the lot... while we were actually sitting in the car at the next closest dealer looking at four RLs... If we were someone who is a sucker for sales people, didn't have a smart phone or do any research, they may have believed that dealer.
I often wondered if that isn't power of KBB or Blackbook. They simply calculate a plus percentage gain on the used cost and that is what dealers negotiate against. Because, the vehicles are so new, there is no used price reality yet.

No matter how you slice it at all... those trucks will never be a good deal.
  • They will have a 2nd owner attached
  • They have Auction stigma on the history
  • It will be worse if they are early VINs with bigger build issues, like body seems, door alignment, leaning, bad trim...etc
  • Dealing with warranty re-certification (which is not free, someone has to cover the cost so add that to the tag), if that can even be done.

Dealers buy these and mark them up, because they can make the pricing look normal on trades. Like that BMW dealer. Let's say I'm a poor sap that wants a pickup and I have an old 3 series ready to 'splode. A BMW dealer will probably negotiate a better price on my BMW and make the price tag offering of that truck look real appealing. Where if I took my same worn BMW to Honda, I would get a worse offer, and no room to negotiate on the new truck. That is just a guess, but still a bad deal all around.

One possibility is they were damaged and have been fixed and can't be sold as new. I reported on another thread of a dealer near me that showed nine RLs in stock. I found out later these were listed in their inventory but were not available for sale. Apparently they all had varying amounts of hail damage and the dealer was stuck with them while their insurance company and Honda sorted things out. Story was Honda didn't want them fixed and sold as they didn't want a bunch of "used" 17 RLs on the market driving down the price. They were trying to work out a settlement and either have them shipped back to the factory where they would be recycled, or parted out. This came not from the dealer sitting on the inventory, but another with the same ownership.
I see one in Texas for sale with a similar history the end of the VIN is 001208. I'm not sure where they started with the VINs, but that seems really low. Maybe pre or early production that was used for some type of static testing, display, etc. It is hard to imagine any of the vehicles being produced with that few miles. Could be a lemon or your might shrink wrap it and get a lot of money at a collector's auto auction in about 20 years.

I don't understand why a title was issued. You can transfer vehicles from dealership to dealership with the certificate of origin. It is the first owner that titles the car. My RL was sent to a Honda dealer in St Joseph MO, then transferred to the dealership in St Louis. When we purchased it we were given the certificate of origin that we used to title it.

Does California have different laws?
Even though the trucks will never be a "deal"... this is all good for us. This early in the game when there is no pricing, a dealer doesn't know what to offer for trade, so they look to find used ones for sale in their system.

When I was negotiating a Ford pickup, I had a year old Audi... he didn't know what to offer for trade because no used values have been established. So, the best he could do was match or come close to what he found in the system for sale elsewhere. There was only one, and it was outrageously priced, so he shrugged and said, I can give you close to that. It would have been a great deal, but I ended up not liking the Ford so I backed out.

So, let 'em list high. If I do end up trading my RL in spring, this will help greatly.
