reply to my own post ... I think I got it - maybe. the splash guard on the driver's side was completely full of water, the drain hole at the bottom was plugged with leaves, road stuff etc. I think maybe the water was pooling where the clip/leak was. make sure your splash guard drains aren't plugged!! explains why it took over 5 years to start leaking.
Dude me too. I have a 2006 Ridgeline and I literally had 4 inches of road film and sand inside the splash guards. I am betting the same thing that they backed up and when it rains hard the water splashes back to those plastic anchor pins and seeps through and pools water on the floor. That is my theory as well. I will let you know if that holds true.
