Will the RL Hold Top Gear on Small Hill & HWY Speeds?
Gotta be one of my Pete peeves. Our '04 tahoe will sometimes slam 2 gears down. Can this truck hold top gear and if it drops down, 1 is it smooth? I'm particularly interested in being able to keep cruise control on our trips from charleston sc to Hendersonville ,nc. On i26. At least until we get to the big climb up the mountain as you enter NC. ** title should read "small hills".

I live in colorado and we have hills. Cruise works like a champ. 3+/- while ascending and decending. The cruise will use gears to maintain speed going downhill too.

I understand the chryslers with the FWD 9 speed transaxle are terrible in this regard. Looks like Honda was smart with their gear ratios and sticking with the 6 spd in this application. Manufacturers searching for more mpg and making their top gears ever taller are gaming the EPA tests but making for a terrible ownership experience.This is a great question. this is a members truck, loaned to the TFL guys to test towing up the ike gauntlet. This should give you an idea of how well your truck will pull hills with nothing in tow. I just saw this on YouTube a short time ago as well. The Ridgeline does a really good job towing for what it is designed to do.
I drive this Corridor all the time. That hill they are climbing is a beast! Many cars and trucks are smoking on the shoulder. You can see the runaway truck ramp on the right side going downhill. It's a scary hill in the snow.

We just got back from Colorado where we were in my wife's 2016 Acura RDX, it to has the same engine and the 6 speed trans, at high altitude 8000 to 10000 feet above sea level the trans would down shift in the mountains when needed, I think it was caused by less air and the computer telling to down shift for more power, its the way its always been. I don't have my 2017 Ridgeline yet (on order), but I would expect it to perform the same under like conditions. My 2008 Ridgeline when the down shifting started, I just took it out of overdrive. I live at 650 above sea level and for small hills the trans does not shift in and out of gear on both my vehicles, I have pulled a small trailer with motorcycles with the 2008 RL and you can get downshifting at times, but your manual says put it in 3rd gear where the overdrive will not kick in and out, takes care of that problem. I would also think that the 2WD and the AWD are setup somewhat different and could perform different under towing conditions.
