That is a new one to me too alan. Definitely sounds like it's in the mechanism, but troubleshooting that over the internet may be a challenge.

Since you can move it out of Park, it doesn't sound like the shift lock is at fault. Do you have any stored DTCs?

The shift lever assembly is more complex than I imagined. You may want to let the shop keep it overnight and troubleshoot the issue.

There are pages of information on the shift lever. Just replacing the shift cable alone is 4 pages.

Those intermittent kind of problems are very difficult to solve until they finally break for good (what an odd term... break for good. ;)

I've been having this problem lately. Has anyone ever found any additional information on it?
Can you be more specific about your problem and experience and what you've done to try and resolve it?

Sounds to me like some sort of mechanical issue with the shift lever and not with the transmission itself.

My 2007 Ridgeline is having similar problems, the difference is that it will not shift out of park. When I attempt to shift it into gear, ALL of the warning lights come on. I unlock it using the steering lock release on top of the column. Could this be a solenoid problem also?
Here's a troubleshooting guide that may help:

The only test I found for the shift lock solenoid (page 14-286) involves the use of the HDS (Honda diagnostic system) which is not likely found in a homeowners garage.

Might be best to take that by the Honda shop and let them diagnose.
