Attention all Apple iPhone users. If you have a base model audio system that is installed in the RT and RTL do not download the new iOS 11.2. Your bluetooth streaming will not work with your audio system. I downloaded it this morning and on my morning drive to work I could not play my Sirius Radio app thru my audio system unless I connected thru the iPod port in the center console. If anyone else has experienced this same problem and has a fix please respond.

So, after reading this I updated my Iphone 6 to 11.2 and since I have a rental Ford Fusion Hybrid right now with the lesser Sync3 system I figured I'd try it. The Sirrus app worked fine on Bluetooth and the Itunes player worked fine on Bluetooth. Whatever implementation Honda has is obviously broken. Won't be able to try my RTL till sometime later in the week though till I get home. Will update once I see what mine's like. But I can say it works with the Ford Sync system.

Anyone seen this screen error?

So, as much as I really, really like my Ridgeline, I've been disappointing since pretty much day one with Honda's "infotainment-Nav" system. Maps were outdated the day I took delivery, it's a very non-intuitive interface, Apple play is super glitchy, and now the head unit has decided to just stop with all Bluetooth connections.

Has anyone else experienced this (see photo)? This error occurred after the head unit went black on my while driving. Car play is functional, but requires me to essentially reboot every app before using (Pandora, Audible, etc.).

This last issue, corresponded with the latest big iOS update on my iPhone, but a bigger question, does Honda EVER do firmware updates and if so, can they be done by me, the owner, or does this require more time wasted at a dealer?

Cheers,
MC

Although rare, Honda has issued firmware updates before, but only to fix problems that they determine are significant and not to add new functionality.

When Honda issues a firmware update for an infotainment system, they distribute the update on USB drives that are assigned a Honda part number. If there is an update and if you can find the part number for it, you could order the update yourself (you'll have to pay for it). If something goes wrong during the update process, you may be responsible.

As long as you're covered under warranty, it's best to let the dealer handle this instead of trying to fix it yourself. Unless there is a workaround or Apple issues a fix on their end, it'll likely be some time (if ever) before Honda will issue an update.

Re: Anyone seen this screen error?

That's super discouraging. Talked to the dealer this AM, and their "Service Engagement Representative" had absolutely no clue what I was trying to relay. Manufacturers across ALL industries need to understand that they need to be software savvy and incorporate adaptable systems that can change as our handheld technologies do...which is every freaking week.

Bluetooth streaming on iOS11.2 is working for me on an iPhone X and the 2017 base radio.

If the phone is already paired you may need to re-add it as an audio device in the radio settings

Menu > Settings > Bluetooth > Connect an Audio Device

If that doesn't work maybe un-pair/re-pair your phone. There were a lot of security updates in 11.2 and it wouldn't surprise me if some bluetooth settings were changed. I had to re-pair my AirPods after 11.2 for instance.

Hope that helps. Let me know if it doesn't and we can compare settings

This is a tough issue for automobile and electronic device manufacturers to face.

Infotainment systems must last the life of the vehicle (15, 20, 25+ years). To keep things consistent and manageable and to minimize exposure to liability issues, the infotainment system must remain in the state that it was designed and released.

If manufacturers regularly released bug fixes and new features for their infotainment systems, each model would become fragmented over time as updates were performed at different times or not at all. Each new feature risks breaking something else (iOS 11.2 is a great example).

So, infotainment systems generally stay the same. It's almost guaranteed that our systems that run Android 4.2.2 will still be running Android 4.2.2 until the vehicles are at the bottom of the recycling facility in a quarter of a century.

Smartphones, on the other hand, completely change hardware every year and software updates to fix security holes and add new features come often. All of these devices have become incredibly complex.

Just FYI, Honda doesn't and can't guarantee support for any iPhone newer than a 6 or version of iOS higher than 8.3 since those were the existing versions when the Ridgeline's system was developed.

Connect Honda {modelgroup} to the {phones} | Pairing Instructions

So, we can't blame Honda for this. The system worked with the phones and software that existed when the system was designed. It's not Honda's responsibility (nor is it practical) to issue new software every time a new phone or update comes out. Frustrating? Yes, but that's the nature of the best.

I'm sorry to hear iOS 11.2 isn't working for Bluetooth connectivity on your Ridgeline.

Our 2016 Accord Touring has plug-in only 'Car Play', so we have an iPod Touch that lives in the glovebox and handles the Car Play duties.

Software updates are always tricky and iOS is no different.

iOS 11.1 gave us weird characters when typing.

11.1.2 fixed the weird characters, but broke the Bluetooth connection between our iPhones and the Honda Hands-Free system.

So far (fingers crossed) 11.2 has been great for the Hands Free connections between our iPhone 8Plus and iPhone X and both Hondas. We also updated both iPod Touches to 11.2 and Car Play is working great on the Accord and my USA Spec adapter is working properly on my Ridgeline.

Hands down the worst software, firmware update experiences I have ever had have been on DJI products and geofence software. Spend a little time with these products and iOS seems like magic. ;)

Re: Anyone seen this screen error?

My Bluetooth connectivity with an iPhone X running 11.2 is fine, but CarPlay is hopelessly broken. Running Waze and Audible causes the infotainment system to crash. It somewhat recovers, but will not recognize the phone either via CarPlay or Bluetooth. Re-pairing and rebooting the phone has not helped. It sours the experience of an otherwise fine truck when you have another two hours to drive and your connectivity is shot!

CarPlay now freezes the infotainment system after running for 20 minutes or so. I expect that it has something to do with having both the Audible app and Waze running. Once frozen, it is difficult to get it going again, but I can usually eventually get back to Satellite radio. I cannot reestablish connectivity with the phone without turning the truck off to restart the infotainment system. Even Bluetooth refuses to connect once this has happened.

I was having some Bluetooth streaming issues with iOS 11.2 so I deleted the bluetooth device on my phone and deleted the iPhone link from the Honda audio unit and re-paired - all OK now. Interesting the bluetooth link for the Honda on my phone was originally called "16AHU" on re-pairing it is now called "HandsFreeLink" which seems to be the correct name as it is mentioned elsewhere in this thread. Everything had been fine with the original link name until Apple 11.2 was installed last week. All apps and music are streaming to audio system, so it's working now under 11.2 Apple software!

I'm curious as well. On a previous IOS, my wife got the Waze audio to go through the system. Haven't tried since the upgrades. I wasn't able to get it to work at all on previous Android phones.

I'm finding the whole thing frustrating with iPhone 8 and all versions of IOS it has had since it's release. Maybe I don't have it paired correctly but I have to frequently pull over and try rebooting everything, pulling plugs, etc. Sometimes it works, sometimes I make the drive in silence.
The worst thing is when I give up on it for a day, then when exiting the car I hear a faint noise in my pocket then pull the phone out to hear CarPlay blasting at full volume.
Also can't kill CarPlay. It runs in the background without a way to kill it. A terminal interface with root access would be nice.
Honda should be 100% responsible for maintaining functionality for the warranty period... then they would just be ******** if they didn't take care of it from then on out. Reputations will suffer, certain manufacturers will be willing and able to take care of it, some will not. Some will need to stop selling cars that have functionality in the dealership, but not 2 months later.

Just the point I was making!

Unless he is running Waze on the iPhone itself, not in CarPlay and simultaneously running Audible in CarPlay. If this is the case, don’t blame Honda for using an unsupported iPhone IOS.

By the way as someone with over forty years in the technology field I find your “if you have to ask” comment pretty rude to anyone!

#23 ·
Let me re-phrase that in a more detailed and less-offensive manner...

The iPhone must be jailbroken. If you have to ask, don't do it. :)
In order for Waze to run on the iPhone and appear on the Ridgeline's Display Audio screen, the iPhone would need to be jailbroken since Waze is not currently a CarPlay-compatible app.

If a person is not familiar with the concept, process, and risks associated with jailbreaking an iPhone, I suggest that person does not attempt to jailbreak their iPhone in order to use Waze via CarPlay.

I take it you are using the term "jailbreak" differently than I understand the term. My familiarity is you need to jailbreak a phone if it is locked to one carrier. But what would that have to do with waze?

Off topic, but as I was researching the iPhone last week, I find it confusing why to order one from Apple in the US you have to show proof of contract and they send it locked to that carrier, but I ordered mine unlocked from Apple Canada without proof of carrier/contract. I haven't had a contract in 10 years and just move the sim from phone to phone.

Jailbreaking refers to modifying an iOS device to do things Apple didn't intend or doesn't approve of. The consequences include a voided warranty, decreased stability, and increased security risks.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOS_jailbreaking

Unlocking refers to the process of releasing an iPhone that was previously locked to a specific carrier for use with other carriers. When a new iPhone model comes out, they are initially sold only as carrier-locked versions. Later, they begin selling unlocked versions. As long as you're not under contract with your carrier, you can unlock a carrier-locked version for use with a different carrier. The version that comes unlocked from the factory is only available at full price and does not include a SIM card. The factory-unlocked version works properly with all carriers unlike the AT&T and T-Mobile versions which do not work with CDMA networks which are used by Sprint and Verizon. Apple began selling the unlocked iPhone X on December 4.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIM_lock

I always wait until the carrier-unlocked (aka "SIM-free") version becomes available for sale.

Just to confirm.... I was having a lot of strange problems with my IPhone Bluetooth. I've taken 2 or 3 Apple updates since it was paired.
I unpaired the phone, deleted the Bluetooth connection from the truck and phone, then restarted both. I then re-paired them.

Time will tell, but all seems to be working well for phone calls. I've not tested Bluetooth music or car play.

Hope this helps.... YMMV

Have a service apt with dealer this Friday (12/29), they have no clue why my electronics have gone kattywonkers, so they wish to run a diagnostic on it and re-flash it. Why I can't do this on my own is a mystery, but they won't share this procedure with me. BTW, my new iPhone 7S made zero difference. Will let the group know what they say.

Just a quick follow up on this. I contacted the Honda factory HandsFree Link customer service (1-888-528-7876) and they were very helpful. Walked me through the factory reset operation. This option is under settings and very well hidden. You lose everything when you use it, but it solved my connectivity issue...for now, anyways. I'd recommend you be sitting in the vehicle with the head unit powered up if you call them, will save everyone time.
