Hello.

I have a 2019 RTL-E and it is around 53k miles.

This morning, for the first time, as I am driving to work, I feel this jerk and stutter happening just about the point the truck wants to shift to 2nd gear. I have a lot of side roads to follow for the first mile, so I cannot go too fast. I am right around this point throughout. Meaning, I feel this stutter almost each time I gave it a bit of gas.

When I got to a stop light, I put the truck in park and turned it off, then on and the problem hasn't re-occurred.

So could it be a bug that restarting the truck solved? Or putting into park solved it?

I am a bit worried because I am close to the 60k PT warranty, and now the truck isn't doing it so I will probably get the "we don't detect a problem". I can take it in just to document it, but I wonder if anyone else has experienced this. If it is a computer type issue, would that be covered under the PT warranty? Meaning, if there is nothing physically wrong with the transmission itslef....

No warning lights, etc....just a jerk (kind of like running out of gas). I see there were TSB for 2017 models, but nothing for 2019. Maybe the same thing? Of course, now is not a good time to be without a truck, and scheduling service visits..

Thanks.

There have been reports of this happening when one of the pressure switches begins to fail. There have also been reports of this leading to a transmission replacement. You can bring it in to "document it", but be prepared to pay a ~$150 diagnostic fee if they don't find a problem. If it does fail at 60,001 miles, don't expect Honda to cover it even if you've previously reported symptoms.

Tough call. Given the history of 6-speed transmission problems, I'd get rid of the vehicle, but I understand that's not always a wise or even possible move.

Thanks for the info. So all weekend no issues, then this morning, it started up again. This time I checked what I could before turning it off, nothing helped. Restarting the truck was the only way to stop it, and for the rest of my commute, no more issues. This time I was able to think and get a video of it happening. You cannot hear the "jolt" but you can easily see the Tach go from 3300 to about 600 in milliseconds while accelerating. With the little I know about cars, it now seems to act as if it misses third gear (or maybe 3rd and 4th). When accelerating, it does shift from 1st to second, but when it would normally go from 2nd to 3rd, it drops to 600 rpm....so I think it slipped a gear.

Is there a way to determine which gear I am in at any time?

I made an appt to have it looked into. I am ok spending a little because maybe they will find something. But with the video I took and the comments I will have documented, they have to do better than "we can't see a problem" or "that's how it is supposed to operate"...

You'd need a scan tool to see what the commanded gear is.

The transmission should never upshift to a gear that results in such a low engine speed as long as the accelerator pedal is being pressed. This could mean that the transmission is shifting to too high of a gear which suggests a hydraulic or mechanical failure (that's not good and would mean either a rebuild or replacement). However, by the issue being intermittent and clearing by restarting the vehicle still makes me think "pressure switch" (that's a relatively cheap, easy fix that can be done without removing the transmission). Further diagnosis is going to be somewhere between challenging to impossible without a scan tool catching it in the act.

Interesting read. I just returned from my Honda service call. I was having the same issue today with my 2017 Ridgeline (65,000 miles) driving in stop and go traffic. When the car went from 1st to 2nd gear, boom ... it started suddenly and continued until I parked the car. When I drove home, no problem. When I drove to the dealer service center, no problem. When I asked what the problem was, I was told there is no problem... my trans fluid levels were fine "maybe just a glitch" is what I was told. This also happened about about a year ago and I brought it in for service and they flushed the trans fluid and replaced it and I have had no issues until today. I am curious about the "pressure switch". Is that something I can address with Honda's service center, since I am not mechanically inclined?

Update for the curious:

Not much to tell. I took it in, showed them the videos (and emailed to them). They kept the truck for two days and called me saying they cannot find a problem... The problem is intermittent so that does not surprise me. When I suggested the pressure switch they just said "maybe but we can't do anything if we can't observe the problem". No lights or error codes, but they could at least check for damaged connectors or something, but it seems they did not. So they gave it back to me and told me the next time it does it, to not restart the truck but immediately drive to them and they will look at it right away.

So either I hope it happens again soon as my warranty will end in 6k miles, or hope it never happens again.

on the plus side, they didn't charge me to check on it (even tough that seems to only involve using my truck to run multiple errands over two days)

Pressure switch issues can be elusive since their failure is sometimes transient and won't set a code. Sometimes, the only way to catch them is to perform a "snapshot" (recording of several parameters while the vehicle is being driven) which are then reviewed by a knowledgeable person to look for something like "3rd gear commanded, but 2nd gear pressure switch indicates 2nd gear engaged". If the switch is simply slow to change states, the transmission may not shift properly, but not set a code. The switch would have to stay in the wrong position for a longer amount of time before a code will set.

Update:
This morning it happened again, just as I was leaving for work. I took it straight to Honda and the service rep remembered me and got a guy on it right away. We went for a test drive and he felt it. He then connected it to a tool he had and drove it again getting a live recording. on that, it said something about a pressure switch solenoid. Issues happening at all gears actually, to a lesser extent. He told me he would submit the data and we will see what Honda recommends. He said more than likely a new transmission (rebuilt). Even if it is something simple, they don't have people on hand to tear apart and repair transmissions and Honda generally just has them swap the whole thing out and they repair it later and use as a rebuilt replacement for someone else...I'm glad it happened with a Honda witness before the warranty expired, but I am sad it happened at all.

Update again:

So they decided to actually change out the sensor, and surprise! It isn't covered by warranty outside of the 3/36... $100 for the part, $400 for labor. They just called me to come pick it up. I am not happy a transmission issue isn't considered "powertrain" but I am very happy I am not getting a transplant.

I'd be most unhappy about being charged $400 labor for 30 minutes of work. The pressure switches on the transmission list for less than $90 each and are external (which is why they aren't covered under the powertrain warranty). They are easily replaced after removing the battery box which is an easy job.

Yeah, I'm not too happy about that, but they kind of had me over a barrel. I thought it was a warranty issue so I went to them. I could have taken it somewhere else for the work but I don't know how hard it is and I have already wasted enough time on this issue....

Dvician, post a picture of your receipt. Curious of which pressure switch they changed. Thanks

I don't have a picture, but it says:

FOUND CODE P0843

1 28610-R36-004 SW, AT OIL PRESSURE $108.49
1 90425-RT4-000 GASKET (10mm) $7.88
2208 LABOR $429.88

Looking at it all online I see I was overcharged for the part, and based on what I see on how to replace it, I agree the labor charge is high.

This may help, I just posted that i had a similar problem, which was intermittent and unpredictable, between first and second gear...boom. My dealer finally was able to replicate the issue and researched it and said it was a known issue... the resolution was to update the "6 A/T Software (Judder)" and to flush the ATF 3X. They said it was important to flush the ATF 3X. Hope this helps.

So do you have any updates?
Did that permanently fix the problem?

I Had same problem three times but each time I took it in they said nothing wrong. This weekend transmission system, emissions system, and blind spot system lights all came on! They replaced Pressure Sensor. We will see if that works. I am worried about the state of my transmission at 43000 miles.

I had this same exact issue on mine as most on here they did the update did the flush 3x all that and the problem still existed and it slowly started pulsing as you took off so they ended up replacing the torque converter....one of the sales guys told us it was about an hour and a half job ...I said ....since when did mechanics become able to switch out a TC in an hour and a half ...even on older vehicles it's a bit longer than that and the entire front subframe doesn't have to come down...he goes not sure but that's usually how long they take. I talked to the service rep and he goes don't listen to him he's a sales guy ....I said he doesn't need to be advising people on times then if he doesn't know what he is talking about so it took them 2 days to do mine LOL so far knock on wood it's doing great I am 4 days after repair no issues.

I had the exact same thing! Transmission emission and blind spot system lights suddenly came in 3bdays ago. Also feeling that bucking again during low gear shift. Gonna take to dealer probably TMR. Did they find the problem on yours?

Same issue on my 2017 black edition. I have a fantastic video that captures the studder, jerk and clunk. What is the best way to share a video on here?

I'm bummed that I'm having this issue, but I must say I am relieved to do a quick Google search and find a helpful thread with many others describing my exact issue. Thanks everyone.
