Local Ford dealer had a Lariat with the 2.7L turbo V6 on the lot when I drove by so I stopped in for a quick test drive. It was optioned fairly well but missing the spray in bed liner. Otherwise, similar to how I'd spec one. Seats were comfy; rear seat had much more space than the Tacoma; not quite as much as the RL - primarily in the foot space under the seat. The seat back was more upright than the RL as well. You could definitely feel the extra few inches they added in width compared to the older generation. It rode very nice for a body on frame truck - some jiggling over moderate bumps. The suspension was tuned on the firm side - something that is typical in my experience with Ford trucks. The interior is well-finished with nice materials at all the touch points. Top of the dash is hard plastic. The engine felt strong, especially mid-range punch. The 10 speed shifted smoothly but seemed overly eager to short shift (I noticed 7th gear at 32 mph). Steering was heavier than the RL; lighter than Frontier; didn't have a strong sense of on-center. Overall, I think it's a great midsize truck compared to the rivals. I still like the RL better for my needs, but it's nice to see other good options out there.

The Ranger ended up being the only other truck we considered besides the RL when we were shopping once I decided against a full-sized truck. I liked the Ranger a lot, but just felt I got more for my money in the RL and we liked the way the RL drives better than the Ranger. I don't think I would have been unhappy had I ended up with a Ranger, but I feel we made the best choice for us.

A lot to like with this Ranger 2.7. It has a wider bed now and I'd prefer something not as wide as the Ridgeline. If the engine has a lot more grunt and response (35 ponies and I think 140 more ft. lbs. of torque lower in the rev range I hope translate into something significant. I'd be interested in an XLT with the rear locker which before discounts prices out similar to an RTL. I like that you can see what gear you're in but the dash sucks compared to the Lariat but it's light years ahead of my 23 RTL It doesn't have 4wd auto though that you can get in a Canyon. One of the reviews I read said that the brake pedal was mushy which would be a non starter for me. Few Rangers available around here and 2.7's are scarce. Probably a grass is always greener situation as my Ridgeline has been good and it's not a daily butI'll be sure to use it a lot more since the salt went down yesterday.
