I bought my 2024 two weeks ago. Had 15,000 miles with two oil changes by previous owner. So today I changed the oil for the third time with a Honda brand filter from WalMart and Mobile One 0W20. Everything went well! Did not raise the truck, was able to get under to reach the filter and drain plug ( Turn the front wheels to the left). First thing to know is you need a nice bright LED portable light to see. I bought an oil diverter after reading what people did to catch the oil from the filter ( available at Amazon). I put in 5.5 quarts. Well.. I saved a few bucks and all is good!

Greetings...

I never changed oil myself in my prior RLs.. dealer gave me lifetime free oil changes...Yes they want ppl to use them for more maintenance which would be expensive..but they never forced it...me...almost the opposite.
Anyway...they always suggested change oil at 50 percent... which was generally 5k miles. When I dumped the RLs at 45k..47k miles after 1,000 miles driving after oil change..THE OIL WAS STILL CLEAN!
Even though I always expected to get rid of RL ... I always changed oil before first 1k miles..then at 2k... I one time changed my own oil and on new vehicles I did find little metal on first oil change.
Funny Chevrolet virtually created computer monitoring ... electronics always worked perfectly in chevy (for example)..But while Honda says monitor knows all (lol lol lol) Chevy folks are more transparent... for example..drive highway all time or mostly system will say (for example) change oil at 7k plus minus. (Or that is 50 percent). Miles... Temperature... distance...stop and go... Standard: highway driving... etc

ght have to pass part of the box on to the next generation of vehicle drivers in the family!
Yep.....if someone hits 15 percent at about the 6000 mile range, and does an oil change.....that one box is good for over 900,000 miles of travel!

Might have to pass part of the box on to the next generation of vehicle drivers in the family!

...unless they drive an EV or one of these!

Well you could join the million mile club. If you do Honda would probably give you a new vehicle, and I bet they would throw in another box of bags.

I had to put a new front right tire on, so I decided to change the filter and oil, to see what all the fuss is about. I believe next time I will take the front wheel off as well. I can't imagine removing filter from underneath. I used the Ziplock bag method and it was good. Still spilled some, but not bad. I had to get a filter wrench that looked like channel locks to remove the filter, was on fairly tight, almost crushing the filter.
Replaced new filter hand tight.

My Lisle filter wrench did not fit:

I don't have the protector plate over my oil pan. Looks like never was one. I was able to drain the oil by just reaching under the front. 17mm or 11/16 box wrench works good.

Filter wrench that worked:

I gotta ask: Seems as though most people here are changing their own oil on brand new RL.
Why not go to the dealer for the first change for free? 2 years of free oil changes, right.
Maybe there are a lot of others that aren't on any forums and just go to the dealer.

In my case, my NART RL is a 2024 I bought brand new in March 2025. Oil had been in there 15 months according to the build date.
Dealer probably wouldn't change the oil because MM wasn't ready.

Second reason, I don't trust dealers, or anywhere I cannot see or talk to the person working on the vehicle.
Last time I had a free oil change at the dealer was in 2010. Car at 3,000 miles. They did the oil and filter change, but when I picked it up they said they uploaded an updated MAP in the computer. From brand new the car opened up at 4,000 RPM like it had a carburetor and another barrel opened up.. would spin up really well. With the new mapping it was gone. Dogged out. It wasn't until i had the timing belt changed that an indy shop put the older MAP back it, and then it ran like the day I bought it.

Third reason:.....my neighbor has a 1996 Toyota Land Cruiser and took it to quick lube place. They dropped the oil, but didn't refill. Now he has a rebuilt 4.0 inline 6. But right after the rebuilt motor, his transmission went out. You hear about this stuff happening by third party... but this is too close.

So I guess I'm getting to be a grumpy old man, and I trust no one.
