Button shifting transmission lag

I traded my 2017 RTLE for a 2021 RTLE. I've noticed a lag when shifting into reverse or drive (pushing the button). Occasionally, I push on the gas expecting it to move but, it's not in gear yet. Any cures, methods or advice.

Yep, there's a lag shifting into reverse, or shifting from reverse to drive, or drive to reverse. Almost 3 seconds.

I'll back out of my driveway and hit D, and it is about 3 seconds before I'm able to move forward. It's a bit annoying.

i can’t speak to the delay in the ridgeline yet but Honda’s 10 speed in the accord has quite a delay too when cold, around the same time frame from what I see here, don’t think it’s any issue, just annoying to some people. Gets better once it warms up. For reference Toyota has some of their 6 speed automatics go into 2nd then first on the first startup of the day to prevent lunging forward due to high idle and that adds a small delay too from personal experience.

Maybe reving the engine to 5000 rpm before hitting the shift button will speed things up!🤣

What is the hurry?

Just kidding, do not rev your motor before dropping it in gear! I feel like I needed to post this disclaimer as there is always one . . . . . .

Plan ahead. Drive it like a boat.

I have an old Trawler. It takes 5 seconds for any change of direction to start taking effect. So I plan at least 5 seconds ahead.

Reverse down your driveway and change to Drive just before the end. Roll across the street and straighten the wheels to your intended direction of travel.
It will just clunk into Drive as you stop. Hit the gas and go.

You don't even have to worry about prop walk.

I had a 2003 Acura TL that did the same thing. Dealer said they all do it. Speaking with other owners he was correct.
Trans ran for 170K miles before it died.
Rebuilt it and guess what? The selection lag was gone!
I don't know how or why or where it went. But it shifted like every other auto trans in the world.

Maybe it was the pens in the console.

Nut behind the wheel?

My 2021 does this also, but I have been taught from day one, NOT to shift from reverse into drive without stopping. My does the same thing when cold, I figure the computer retards the shift points a little to get the fluid flowing, we got a lot of gears in that tranny. Once the truck is at operating temperature it shifts fine, what little bit I can feel.

I had an 07 Ridge that had the column shifter. I would often shift into neutral when stopped, a habit I got from my first days of driving a manual transmission. I always felt more comfortable when there was no pulling when stopped and in gear. The 07 took a bit of time to engage the gears when shifting back into drive so the delay in the 2020E seems 'normal' to me
When I got my 20202E I was uneasy about leaving the tranny in gear when stopped, ( I don't use the auto idle feature) . I was pleasantly surprised to see that when in gear and stopped, lifting my foot off the brake doesn't result in the truck creeping forward very much if any on level roads. So I don't feel the need to shift into neutral when stopped. The small delay when sifting into gear is not an issue for me.

My '20 RTL-E (9-Speed ZF Trans) is slow doing the Park - to - Reverse - to - Drive shifting as well. I've adjusted my response expectations accordingly. There's very noticeable forward/reverse roll slop when in Park as well.
