I had a 2003 Acura TL that did the same thing. Dealer said they all do it. Speaking with other owners he was correct.
Trans ran for 170K miles before it died.
Rebuilt it and guess what? The selection lag was gone!
I don't know how or why or where it went. But it shifted like every other auto trans in the world.

Maybe it was the pens in the console.
Nut behind the wheel?

Yup it's real and it sucks, I posted about this a while ago, when I assume not many people had the push button yet, and I got a less than agreeing response. I get in my truck, I start it up and hit two buttons, one to put it in drive and the other to turn off the auto stop. And then wait. One more reason I hate the push button gear shifter.

It's not a deal breaker, but I hate those buttons, and I hate the lag time.

Another pain the ass is parallel parking and having to hit buttons 2 or 3 times. I could go on, but no one is ever going to convince me these stupid ass buttons are better than the console gear shifter.
Who was the genius that thought having buttons for shifting and no buttons for volume and selector controls was a good idea?

2021 here and have not noticed any gear selection lag. However, I always bring my vehicles to a complete stop and give the transmission a moment to get situated after gear selection before depressing the gas pedal. Less wear and tear as well as damage prevention.

I traded my 2017 RTLE for a 2021 RTLE. I've noticed a lag when shifting into reverse or drive (pushing the button). Occasionally, I push on the gas expecting it to move but, it's not in gear yet. Any cures, methods or advice.
Had my 21 Sport since Feb. Have noticed an occasional lag, usually first go in the morning, but not always. Hope it doesnt become chronic.

Plan ahead. Drive it like a boat.

I have an old Trawler. It takes 5 seconds for any change of direction to start taking effect. So I plan at least 5 seconds ahead.

Reverse down your driveway and change to Drive just before the end. Roll across the street and straighten the wheels to your intended direction of travel.
It will just clunk into Drive as you stop. Hit the gas and go.

You don't even have to worry about prop walk.
My not so old Luhrs is somewhat the same.

SARCASTIC POST

Honda thinks that the shifting delay is so much shorter than the infotainment system boot up that most won’t notice it.

Traded my 2017 RTL-E in on the same 2020 truck. I know its a different transmission, but give me my shift lever back please. I can tell where I'm at by feel and the truck is ready to go when I put it there. I loath the delays when parallel parking and the extra safety logic that often puts the vehicle in park.

Yep, noticed it on my '20E as well. Did you also notice, you can't put it into reverse with the door open? Like if you just need to back up a couple of feet or something. You put your foot on the brake, put it in reverse, and as soon as you take your foot off the brake, it goes back into park.
I hated that, and the lag, and the pushbuttons, and the auto idle stop. That's why I traded my '20E in on a '19E. Much happier now.
You need the seat belt connected, than you can go into reverse, I went to junk yard and got a seatbelt connector out of an old honda, there are many different ones, I made a drawing of mine and measured the thickness also, works great, open door, lean out, back up, (don't fall out) works great.

No Sheet, Sherlock ! A lever for shifting (with no delay) and knobs for volume and fan speed would go a long way to making this vehicle almost a pleasure to drive.

Yes the ~3 sec delay combined with fingers groping for the D button can be a hazard if you have to back out of your driveway onto a busy residential street...

I fully concur On my 6 week old 2020 RL sport. Rather unsettling. I was thinking of talking to Honda when I bring it in for service and see if there is a software issue that they can correct. It’s not right. I sure hope they can reduce or eliminate that lag.

SIR,
what year model did you drive before the 2021?
we bought the 2019 Ridgeline (6-speed auto) and that has approx. One.5 second delay. The salesman told us to buy the 2019 over the 2020 because the ten-speed was new in 2020.
Glad we listened to him, but looks like Honda has some answering to do.

A long shift could cost someone their life, if trying to avoid a bad situation got delayed.
Just say’in.

Keep up the informative posts.
Best,
Steve

Sounds like your salesman has some answering to do. ;)

The Ridgeline doesn't have a 10-speed. It has a 9-speed that Honda has been using since 2014.
