I carry my golf clubs in the trunk. Every time I took them out or put them in I thought I was wasting space in the bottom of the trunk. I decided to put a shelf in using dividers as support. The first thing I learned is the trunk is all angles and curves. Nothing is square or perpendicular.
The dividers: For a 6 inch high divider (the height of the front slots) the distance between the slots at the bottom of the trunk measures 15 ¾ inches, the top measures 17 ¼ inches. The angle is 16 degrees. Cut out a 17 ¼ inch by 6 inch piece of wood. (I used some scrap ⅜ inch plywood). If you have a miter saw a 16 degree cut will give you the 15 ¾ inch bottom measurement. If you don’t have a miter saw measure ⅞ inch in from each side from what will be the bottom of your divider – draw a line to the top corner. There’s your angle. Round the bottom corners.
The shelf: I’ll give you two options.
Option 1; (I call it the quick & dirty). Cut a board (I used scrap ¼ inch Masonite) 16 inches by 42 inches. Cut 2 inches off the corners that face the front of the vehicle. It will fit although a little “tippy” at the ends.
Option 2; (I call it the OCD fit). Make a pattern. Cut a board (again I used ÂĽ inch Masonite) 17 â…ť inches by 44 inches. Trace the pattern to the board. I cut the board using a jig saw and finished with the little sanding drum on my Dremel. For the handholds I centered them between the dividers used an old box to trace the pattern. A Âľ inch spade bit and jig saw did the rest.
Note 1: â…ś inch thick is all you can get to fit in the bottom of the slots
Note 2: Three $1.00 cans of spray paint and a scrap of indoor/outdoor carpeting finishes the project
Note 3: If you would like a copy of the pattern send me a self-addressed stamped envelope (# 10/business size or larger). PM me for my address
